#PLStories- Andoni Iraola reveals loan move of Jaidon Anthony to Leeds United was not controlled by him #AFCB

Anthony had featured regularly under new boss Iraola, starting three of the first four games this season. However, after Cherries moved late to sign winger Luis Sinisterra on loan, Anthony was suddenly deemed surplus to requirements, shipped out to Leeds United in the Championship for the rest of the season. Iraola explained earlier in the summer how he has little to do with transfer dealings, leaving that to the likes of Richard Hughes and Neill Blake. Asked how much of a say he had in the shock Sinisterra and Anthony swap deal, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “It is a situation that happened on the last day of the window. “The club thought that we could be stronger adding a player like Luis Sinisterra. “He was on Saturday (at Brentford) watching the game. Now he is going with the national team, so we will not have him for the next 10 to 12 days. “But it is another player we have who can make the difference, starting from wide. It is a good addition for us.” Quizzed on if he supported the idea of Anthony going to Leeds, Iraola added: “It is a decision he had to make. “I tried to help him as much as I could, because Jaidon, I love him as a person and as a player. “Of the four games he has been with me, he has started three. He was very good in pre-season. “But he had to take the decision, because we have a lot of options there out wide. “It is the decision he finally took and I hope the best, because he deserves it. “I know he is going to play very well there in Leeds and I hope he returns next season even better as a player.” Luis Sinisterra joined Cherries on deadline day (Image: PA) Anthony was with Cherries’ squad in the team hotel, getting ready to face Brentford in the Premier League the following day, before his sudden departure. Detailing his conversations with the 23-year-old, Iraola said: “I tried to be as honest as I could, because he deserves it. “I had no problem if he was to stay here, no problem at all. “And you can see because he has played with me, he has started. He is a reliable player. “You tell him to do this, he will do it or he will try to do it. He will make mistakes, like everyone else, but he is a very reliable player. “He had to take the decision knowing the players he will be fighting for in his position. “The option he had also I think was really good, to a very good team. “He decided to take that route. It’s a loan, so I hope he comes back with us, for sure he will, like a better player. “As a person, he is a top, top guy. I think he deserved all the honesty, as much as I could. “I tried to help him, but he was the one with the final decision.”

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Jaidon Anthony on assist for David Brooks against Swansea in League cup #AFCB

Anthony provided a fantastic assist for Brooks to equalise after Cherries trailed 1-0 in Wales thanks to Matt Grimes’ first-half penalty. The away side then took a lead through Hamed Traore, before the hosts again levelled scores via Jamie Patterson. In the end it was substitute Ryan Christie who had the last say, finding the bottom corner in the 90th minute to send Cherries through to the next round. Discussing his assist for Cherries’ first, Anthony insisted that Brooks deserved the credit for applying the finishing touch. He told the Daily Echo: “It was a good ball and to be fair it's not an easy finish either, on his weak foot. “I think he's had a really good pre-season and a start to the season in front of goal. “I'm happy he could put it away and help us to win.” Brooks’ goal came about after Cherries won the ball high up the pitch, with Anthony believing the strike to be representative of the way Andoni Iraola wants Cherries to play. “I think the manager wants us to be aggressive in every game,” explained the 23-year-old. “It's a perfect example of the high press and what that can do. “Win it back and then attacking pass, and we get the goal - happy days. “The most important thing was getting through to the next round. “The first half, we knew we weren't at the races and we knew we had to react in the second half. “I think obviously the second goal is probably a bit unfortunate, but I think we deserved what we got in the end.” The draw for the third round will be made on Wednesday evening, following the conclusion of second round ties. Teams will not be regionalised, meaning Cherries could be handed another lengthy trek. Sides competing in Europe enter at this stage of the competition, with third round ties being staged the week commencing Monday, September 25.

Anthony played the first hour of the contest, coming off as Cherries trailed to Jarrod Bowen’s curled effort from outside the box. Dominic Solanke popped up eight minutes from time to ensure the spoils from Andoni Iraola’s first game in charge of Cherries would be shared. Speaking to the Daily Echo after the game, Anthony commented: “Tough fight. “They're a good side, they're good at what they do. “But, probably a good point. “It's a positive start. “Obviously we wanted the win, but, they're really good at what they do and it was a tough game. “Like I said, I think we got what we deserved and went in the right direction.” Asked if he felt a difference between the intensity of pre-season and competitive football, Anthony replied: “Maybe. “The manager’s pushed us hard in pre-season, so I feel like we put a lot into that. “It was a big day for us today. “They're really good at what they do, they make it hard. I feel like we brought up a good fight and got what we deserved.” Anthony and Cherries’ focus now turns to a trip to Anfield next weekend, when they face Liverpool on Saturday, August 19.
Jaidon Anthony

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Jaidon Anthony hoping to become more ‘complete’ player #AFCB

Winger Anthony signed a five-year deal back in February to confirm his long-term future lies with Cherries, the former Arsenal youngster now entering his second season in the Premier League. Much has changed since Anthony got his first taste of top-flight football against his former club last August, with the man who handed him his Premier League debut, Scott Parker, long gone. Parker’s replacement Gary O’Neil has also moved on, with Basque boss Andoni Iraola in charge at Cherries. With the Spaniard liking his teams to press high and use the full width of the pitch, it appears the change in management could be a good fit for Anthony. When this was put to the wideman, Anthony told the Daily Echo: “Different playing style, different ideas and I'm enjoying it. “It's been a tough pre-season getting to know the way he wants us to play and to be honest we're still learning as we go, but I think we're all enjoying it and combining into what he wants us to do. “I probably played a lot of my minutes last year as a wing-back and doing a lot of defensive work. “Obviously this year we’ve got a different formation and there's a lot of running in behind, but yes, there's a lot of work to be done on my game especially.” Finding himself at Cherries after being released by Arsenal, it has not been a straight forward path to the top for Anthony, who was playing his football on loan in the sixth tier as recently as 2020. “I'm working out every day to improve not just what I'm not so good at,” continued the 23-year-old. “But what I'm very good at as well, to try and become more of a complete player.” Asked if he has any particular goals for the campaign ahead, Anthony remained coy, sharing: “Nothing too specific, but obviously just want to do as well as I can and try and help wherever I can. “There's obviously personal targets I want to try and hit, but my main goal is to help the team in whatever capacity I’m needed.” With every outfielder encouraged to get forward when the opportunity arises, players often have to deputise in unfamiliar positions to help Cherries keep their shape. After playing as a quasi-wing back for much of last season, Anthony is more than willing to help out at the back if needs must. He restarted: “As a team we want to help each other out where we can and if I'm not attacking then I'm going to try and do my best for the team wherever they need me. “If I have to cover, then that's what I'll do. But my job is to try and attack and create chances and that's what I'm trying to do for the team.”
Gary O’Neil

#PLStories- Gary O’Neil happy with progress of Jaidon Anthony #AFCB

It has been a rapid rise for the 23-year-old, who just three years ago was out on loan at non-league Weymouth, helping them clinch promotion from the sixth tier. The talented winger played a bit-part role for Cherries the following campaign, before starring under Scott Parker in the Championship last season. Anthony missed just one league game in 2021-22, starting 38 of the 46 fixtures, providing eight goals and six assists. With the arrival of Marcus Tavernier, Anthony has found starts harder to come by this term under O’Neil, but has still played a big role. The former Arsenal youngster has played 27 Premier League matches in his first year at this level, starting 10. He has netted three league goals and provided an assist. With his contract winding down, Anthony penned a new deal in February of this year, which runs until the summer of 2027. “I think he’s had a very successful first Premier League season,” O’Neil told the Daily Echo, when asked about Anthony. “Last season was obviously an incredible success for him, from the journey that he’d been on through youth set-ups and academy, to come into a team trying to get promoted and to have the impact that he did was incredible. “To take that on again this year and record some decent numbers around assists and goal involvements and chances created that he has, still shows his quality every day.” Previously seen as one of Cherries’ main attacking outlets, Anthony has at times this season been utilised as a wing-back, adding more defensive responsibility to his game. “I don’t see us using him overly differently,” said O’Neil, discussing Anthony’s role on the pitch compared to his time in the Championship. “Of course, we’ve been at the different end of the league, which means we have a little bit more defending to do than we did last season. “And then occasionally, you’re right, we lost Tav for a long spell and I do like someone being able to do that role within the squad where you’re attacking player, but you have some sort of responsibility to sometimes turn us into a back four-and-a-half type thing, which Tav is very good at and Dango (Ouattara) is also very good at and Jaidon was used in that a few times. “He’s so diligent, so hard-working and then still brings you the quality going forward that he has no problem with it. “I’m sure if you ask him, after the end of the season, when he’s reflected, he’ll be really happy with the first season that he’s had in the Premier League, because it’s a tough step up. “I expect more from him again in the next few weeks and especially next season.”

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Jaidon Anthony calls on team to ‘get back to basics’ after west ham loss #AFCB

Gary O’Neil’s charges were reminded they are not safe from the threat of relegation by fellow strugglers West Ham on Sunday, the Hammers easing to a 4-0 win at Vitality Stadium. Once again Cherries were undone by set-pieces, West Ham opening the scores from a corner headed home by Michail Antonio. The Cherries defence did not cover itself in any glory for the second on 12 minutes, Lucas Paqueta ghosting in at the far post to score another header. Declan Rice caught the hosts out at another corner before the break, with substitute Pablo Fornals finishing the scoring midway through the second half. Speaking after the game, Anthony shared: “We're very disappointed with ourselves, first and foremost. “The way we executed the game plan. We weren't good enough in both boxes and we were punished for that. “Frustrated, but we got another game coming very fast and we’re looking to put it right. “Hopefully we can do that. “We know we have to turn up. There's no game that's going to be given to you in this league. We were punished for mistakes and for not being in the right position and stuff like that. We’ve got to learn from it, and bounce back on Thursday. “This league, it does that to you. You can never really predict what's going to happen. Obviously we're disappointed with how we performed. We didn't really get the basics right. We were punished for that.” Not first the first time this season, Cherries struggled to create clear cut chances despite enjoying a majority of possession. “I think every team will say so it's a lot harder to break a team down when they get bodies behind the ball, but we know we have the players to break it down,” Anthony explained to the Daily Echo.  “(Against West Ham) it didn't quite work out, but it's never easy when you have that many bodies in front of a goal to try and try and find gaps that they don't let you create.” Cherries face another six-pointer with a rival for survival in the form of Southampton on Thursday evening, with Anthony hoping his team can put right their wrongs from the weekend. He restarted: “You see in this league, there's always surprises in there and Thursday, I'm sure there'll be no difference. Another tough game that we're going to try and try and win and hopefully we will do that there. “We’ve had some good results recently and showed what a good side we are. We’ve just to get back to basics. Try and pick ourselves up, and getting going again Thursday. “We got another chance to try and put it right and be on the right side of a result, of a performance on Thursday.

#PLStories- Jaidon Anthony and Ryan Christie think arriving late may be good for Cherries to win games #AFCB

Due to a traffic incident on the A406, Cherries’ team coach got stuck as they travelled from their hotel to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. They finally arrived at 2.15pm, an hour later than planned. Kick-off was pushed back from 3pm to 3.15pm, with boss Gary O’Neil keen for it to be delayed even further to reduce the risk of his players picking up injuries. Cherries fell behind, but eventually emerged 3-2 victors. Discussing the pre-match delay, Christie told the Daily Echo: “I felt fine. There was a bit of traffic or an accident or something on the way. “I was happy enough with the delayed kick-off. I didn’t want to wait too much longer than that. “I actually prefer having less time going into a game. “I think it happened at QPR last season and we played well as well. So no problems. “Maybe we should be later to games more often!” Jaidon Anthony, who replaced Christie during the second half, added: “It was madness before the game. “We were sat there still for a very long time and sort of didn’t feel like we were going to get there. “It was obviously a quick warm-up and I think the boys did well to regain focus and switch on to the job we had at hand.”

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Jaidon Anthony on new deal with Cherries #AFCB

Cherries announced that the 23-year-old had extended his stay at the Vitality Stadium until the summer of 2027, signing a four-and-half-year new contract. The rise of Anthony has been near-meteoric, with the winger arriving on the south coast following his release by Arsenal at 16. When Cherries were last involved in a relegation battle during lockdown in the summer of 2020, Anthony was getting his first taste of senior football on loan at National League South Weymouth. Two seasons after helping the Terras to promotion from the sixth tier via the play-offs, Anthony was celebrating reaching the Premier League as an established first teamer with Cherries. Asked if he expected to be a Premier League regular at this stage of his career, Anthony told the Daily Echo: “Probably not so soon. “I thought I would have had to go do some loans through the leagues, and try and work my way up in that way. “But I always knew I had some talent, and I knew I wanted to play at the highest level that I could. “And I'm just grateful for the opportunities that I got, obviously, last year and this year, to be able to be in this position and be a Premier League player, that's fighting week in, week out to try and get some results.” Discussing negotiations, Anthony shared: “It’s been a long time, but I'm just buzzing it’s finally done. “It’s felt like ages, but I can just focus, get my head down and get back to work and try and have a successful rest of the season.” In a bid to strengthen their squad for the survival battle, Cherries added six new signings in the January window. Three of those arrivals play in a similar position to Anthony, with the winger keen to battle for his spot in the team. He added: “The club just did the best they could to try and keep us in the league. “Obviously we knew we needed to strengthen. It wasn't really my focus because if I'm being honest, I just focus on how I could help and that will always be the same, really. “I think everywhere you go, you're going to have to fight to get in the team. It was the same last year. Obviously, we signed a lot of players last year and a lot in my position as well. And it was always a fight to try and play. “The level goes up and we've got an exciting squad, a lot of talented players in my position and whatever the manager decides, I'm there to try and help wherever I can. “And obviously every player wants to play and be in the starting eleven, but I understand that it won't be like that throughout my career. “There'll be some times where I have to bide my time and work to get in the team.”

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Jaidon Anthony previews important Newcastle fixture for Cherries #AFCB

Eddie Howe returns to the Vitality Stadium having lead Newcastle to the top four and the League Cup final, whilst Cherries’ recent run of eight games without a win seeing them drop into the relegation zone. Anthony scored Cherries’ only Premier League goal since the World Cup break against Nottingham Forest, the only point they have mustered since November. Previewing the fixture with the Daily Echo, Anthony shared: “You have seen every game in this league is tough. “On the run we’re on, you can see that it’s never going to be easy. “They’re having an amazing season and we’ll have a good week to prepare and then we’ll come ready and hopefully get a result out of that one.” A late Kaoru Mitoma goal saw Cherries come away from their last game without any points, Brighton narrowly winning 1-0. Anthony maintained that the side remained confident in their approach, sharing: “We know what we came to do and as a team we want to stick to the gameplan and that will hopefully get us points on the board. “I think we did that (against Brighton) and it’s disappointing in the way we conceded and so late on, but we’ve got to dust ourselves down and go again really. Cherries drafted in three new attackers during the January window, with two of the arrivals, Antoine Semenyo and Hamed Traore, capable of playing in Anthony’s primary position on the left wing. Asked about the increased competition in the side, the winger restarted: “We also had some top players in my position always. “I think in every club you need a lot of options and obviously we’ve had some players leave in my sort of position as well. “I’m always going to fight for my position. I think that will never change. “It’s not really something I can control. The manager has got to pick his best 11 for the team and hopefully I’m in it. “If I’m not, I’ll try and help in any way I can really.” The 23-year-old then commented how he hoped the reinforcements could help Cherries turn their season around. “We hope so,” he added. “We need to get some results and we can see they’ve got some real quality and they add to our squad and our depth. “Obviously we’ve had a lot of injuries as well, so we’ll have some players coming back. Hopefully they can help us and we can get some points on the board.”

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Jaidon Anthony and Jordan Zemura call for Cherries fan support #AFCB

STARLETS Jaidon Anthony and Jordan Zemura took to social media last night in a plea to fans. Cherries’ 4-2 defeat to Championship leaders Burnley in the FA Cup led to an array of boos and jeers from supporters at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday. As fans voiced their displeasure at a fifth straight loss, Anthony was the only player to lap the stadium and applaud fans for their efforts. Posting on Twitter, Anthony started: “Trust me, I get your frustrations. “We as players are as frustrated with the way we are playing too, but we do know there’s a long, long way to go in the season and there’s enough talent in this group to turn our fortunes around. “But we can only do it together. We need you more when it’s not going well. “You have every right to voice your opinions but whilst the game’s still going and we still have a chance, why not give us all the help you can, and be loud and proud. “Long way to go and many highs to come, I promise!” Defender Zemura took a similar view, also calling for fans to cut out the boos directed solely towards captain Lloyd Kelly. He posted: “Times like this (are) never easy, when everything feels sticky and things are not falling how you want. “But that’s football, more or less, that’s life. All you can do is stand up, chest out and go again, and keep fighting. “More than enough within this team, and (we) will continue to fight and be counter for. “All in this together, from the team to the staff, to you, the fans. “However disappointed you are with the performance, booing individual players is not on, especially the captain of the team – for that, I cannot stand with! “As a collective that’s fair because it has not been good enough, and we know that! We will continue to work and push each other to be better. “However, we’re in this together and that’s all! “Plenty of games to put things right and enjoy the highs!”

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Jaidon Anthony on league cup victory over Everton #AFCB

STARLET Jaidon Anthony revealed how Cherries had worked on being more attacking to see out games after helping his steer past Everton 4-1 in the League Cup. Cherries have slipped to consecutive defeats in the Premier League after taking two-goal leads against Tottenham Hotspur and then Leeds United, with the side perceived by some as sitting deeper and inviting pressure. Once again the Dorset outfit found themselves with a two-goal lead, Jamal Lowe’s deflected opener added to by Junior Stanislas’ poke early in the second-half. When Demarai Gray’s perfect curler found the back of the net to cut the deficit, there were fears of a similar capitulation, but Cherries rallied again, Emi Marcondes tapping home before Anthony made sure of their progression to round four. Asked by the Daily Echo if Cherries had looked to attack further after taking two-goal leads, Anthony responded: “Yes, that's been the focus really, in the week. “Obviously, we've been in good positions in the past few games and we want to keep going and keep pushing. “I think we've been playing well, and it's easy to try and hold on to what you have. “But we didn't want to do that too early and give them a foot in the game. “And what they scored, it was still the same message, to keep attacking. “And we created openings and got the goals that we wanted to finish off the game.” All four of Cherries’ goalscorers have been somewhat bit-part players this season. Youngster Anthony revealed how the lack of gametime amongst the nine changes for the cup tie served as motivation. He continued: “We were all raring to go. “A lot of players that haven't got a lot of minutes this season and in the end, I think it's a top performance from everyone. “We deserved the win. “Everyone wants to be playing at the end of the day. That's what we all want to do. “And this is an opportunity to get some minutes in the legs and show what we can do. “I think everyone gave a good account of themselves. “I'm proud of everyone.”

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth star Jaidon Anthony insists sacked manager Scott Parker ‘always gave you belief’ #AFCB

WINGER Jaidon Anthony defended former Cherries boss Scott Parker and said he was “top” with the players behind the scenes. Parker was sacked by the Dorset club after just four games of the Premier League campaign, following losses to Arsenal, Manchester City and a humiliating 9-0 reverse against Liverpool. Following the defeat at Anfield in August, Parker said his side were “unequipped” after making the step up from the Championship to the Premier League. Asked what that was like to hear, Anthony told The Beautiful Game Podcast: “I always speak highly of the old manager as well. He was top with the players. “Probably behind the scenes, it wasn’t like that. As a player he always gave you belief as well. “I think when you are a team coming up and you’ve got Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool in your first few fixtures, it’s not going to be easy. “Anyone looking at it at the start of the season wouldn’t have written us off anyway. When you are in it and you get three big defeats it’s hard.   “Now it’s nice we have got some good results and are confident but it’s weird as a player in those moments. You don’t focus on it really.” Cherries have since gone on to register 10 points from nine games under interim boss Gary O’Neil.

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Jaidon Anthony on making his Premier League debut and leaving Arsenal #AFCB #ArsenalFC

STARLET Jaidon Anthony labelled his Premier League debut as a “special day” even if Cherries’ 3-0 defeat to Arsenal was “disappointing”. Two first half goals from Martin Odegaard effectively decided the result 10 minutes into the game, leaving Cherries head coach Scott Parker to switch tactics at half-time. The winger was introduced as a half-time substitute for Marcos Senesi, seeing Cherries move from a 3-5-1-1 to a 4-3-3, with Anthony deployed on the left-wing. READ MORE: William Saliba added a third shortly before the hour mark, but Cherries were notably improved in the second period. Reflecting on his first taste of Premier League football, Anthony told the Daily Echo: “It was disappointing, the first half, for the team. “They punished us very quickly and we didn't really get near them too much. “So, we just wanted to try and make an impact in the second half, and get around them and I thought we'd done a bit better. “Obviously disappointing result, but a special day. “We didn't really get too close to them in the first half and the manager just wanted to try and get near them, get around them and I think the new formation definitely helped. “It was a disappointing day overall. We'll learn from that, for sure.” Released by Arsenal as a youngster, Anthony was playing non-league football with Weymouth just over two years ago. Despite his meteoric rise and breakthrough into Cherries’ first team and promotion to the Premier League, the Hackney-born winger is remaining level headed. When asked how he was feeling after becoming a Premier League player, he shared “I guess the same old Jaidon! “Obviously a special day and one I dreamed of for a long time. “I just want to get my head down and hopefully have a big impact this season, and get some more game time.”
