#PLStories- Fraser Forster on his decision to join Spurs #THFC #SAINTSFC

FRASER Forster described as a "fantastic opportunity" the chance to join Tottenham Hotspur, insisting: "I couldn't get here fast enough." Forster's departure from Saints after eight years was today confirmed, with his contract set to expire at the end of this month. And Spurs have moved quickly to snap up the England goalkeeper, who arrives on a free transfer and officially becomes a Tottenham player on July 1. Forster will battle Hugo Lloris for the starting spot in north London, with Antonio Conte's Spurs gearing up for a return to the Champions League, following their fourth-placed finish in the Premier League. Discussing his move, Forster told Tottenham's official website: "I’m absolutely delighted. “This is a fantastic opportunity for me. When a team like this comes along, it’s impossible to say no. I couldn’t get here fast enough to get it done. “Everything about the place is world-class. "The stadium is probably the best I’ve ever been to - ask any player in the Premier League, and that’s what they’ll say. "The training ground is unbelievable, to be able to come here and work, and work hard, I’m very privileged. "It’s an opportunity I’m very grateful for." He added: “It will be a fantastic season, fantastic to have Champions League football, obviously, important to have got that, and now having achieved that, I’m sure the club will want to go as far as they can in the competition. "I’ve played almost 50 European games, so if I can come in and help in any way possible, that’s what I’ll be looking to do.” Forster made 162 appearances for Saints, following his arrival from Celtic in the summer of 2014. #PLStories- Southampton boss responds to question on Fraser Forster future #SAINSTFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl has reiterated there is “nothing that we could announce” on the future of Fraser Forster, as his contract runs down into its final months. The 34-year-old goalkeeper has re-emerged as the Saints number one since Alex McCarthy’s injury back in December, but as it stands is still set to leave the club at the end of June. Forster has made 19 appearances in all competitions this campaign, including 14 in the Premier League – and is approaching nearly eight years since arriving at St Mary’s. The Hexham-born former Newcastle United product even resurrected an unlikely England career with a shock call-up as emergency cover by manager Gareth Southgate. However, there is still nothing more the club can reveal on his future, “nothing that we should announce or could announce,” Hasenhuttl insisted, anyway. “You can be sure that as soon as we have something to announce we will tell you first,” he added. “He grabbed his chance with all you could do and if you want to pick last weekend, the one player who was nearly on his best performance level was Fraser. “It’s not so easy after this long break that he never played that he has such an intense time now but I think he handled it quite well and definitely he is a player who did a very good job this season.”
Gareth Southgate Manager

#PLStories- Gareth Southgate on giving Saints keeper Fraser Foster a chance #SAINTSFC

ENGLAND manager Gareth Southgate insisted all of his goalkeepers “have slightly different attributes” but refused to hint whether we would see any rotation in his net. Saints stopper Fraser Forster received a late call-up last week to bring him back into the Three Lions squad for the first time in nearly six years. The last of the 34-year-old’s six England caps came in an international friendly versus Australia, back in May 2016 – ahead of the European Championships in France, where he travelled but did not feature. Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is yet to let Southgate down across any of his 43 caps for his country, and performed well across 90 minutes in the 2-1 win over Switzerland on Saturday. England number one Jordan Pickford helped take Gareth Southgate's side to a World Cup semi-final and EURO final (Pic: PA) However, Burnley’s Nick Pope and Forster will both be hoping to get a chance to don the England shirt again, when Ivory Coast visit Wembley on Tuesday, March 29. Asked if it is more difficult to rotate your goalkeeper than the rest of the XI, Southgate responded: “Well, it’s no different to any other position really, because the profiles of the players do alter. “If we start with Harry Kane as a centre-forward he has certain attributes of coming to link the game, coming short to feet. “If we play Ollie (Watkins), he is a player that is better running in behind defences and our players have to recognise those differences.” England manager Gareth Southgate (Pic: PA) He continued: “It’s the same with all the goalkeepers, they all have slightly different attributes that the more you know about your teammates will help you to have an understanding. “The profile of the goalkeeper does change certain aspects of how you would like to play, but that is really the same on every position on the pitch.” Forster, who has played the last 12 Premier League matches for manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, had a stroke of fortune to get back into the England reckoning. Fraser Forster in England training (Pic: PA) Both Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale and West Brom’s Sam Johnstone withdrew from the squad, to open up a place for the former Celtic giant. Southgate could opt to give both Pope and Forster 45 minutes versus the African nation tomorrow, or allow Pickford to retain the shirt altogether.
Ralph Hasenhuttl

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl delighted with goalkeeper Fraser Forster’s performances in absence of Alex McCarthy #SAINTSFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl remained coy on the future of shotstopper Fraser Forster this week, not allowing himself to be drawn on whether a new deal will be offered to the 33-year-old. Forster has had a varied career at St Mary’s, finding himself in and out of the team – and the club, with the giant goalkeeper spending time on loan at former club Celtic in the recent past. With all four goalkeepers involved in the first team believed to have deals expiring at the end of this campaign, it remains to be seen who out of Forster, Alex McCarthy, Willy Caballero and Harry Lewis will be offered new deals. On top of the predicament of expiring deals, Hasenhuttl’s goalkeeping headache has been worsened by frequent injuries throughout the campaign. Caballero was drafted in after injuries stuck both McCarthy and Forster, with the latter regaining match fitness to reclaim the starting berth in Saints’ XI. With McCarthy still sidelined, Forster has largely impressed since returning in between the sticks, with strong performances in recent weeks. Speaking about Forster, Hasenhuttl commented: "We always speak about chances, and he (Forster) grabbed his chance definitely. "I must say we have a fantastic atmosphere at the moment with the goalkeeping team, Willy Caballero is a fantastic character and Fraser has definitely benefited from him because he is really a good guy. "He has done a fantastic job and this is why after Alex (McCarthy) was injured, we haven't struggled. “We have good replacements and he has done a good job. When pressed on whether Fraser’s recent performances would earn the former Newcastle youngster a new deal at St Mary’s, Hasenhuttl sidestepped the question. Instead, the Austrian chose to praise Fraser for his contributions to the team. "It is always helpful for me and for him if he delivers good performances, which help us, help him and in the end, the club,” added the 54-year-old. “This is what we want."
Fraser Forster

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl makes Fraser Forster number one goalkeeper choice #SAINTSFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl signals that Fraser Forster is his number one in Alex McCarthy’s absence despite the arrival of Willy Caballero, saying: “It was clear that when Fraser was fit today he starts.” Ex-Celtic stopper Forster, 33, made his first start of the Premier League season after playing each of the three EFL Cup games and performing well. With McCarthy’s extended absence on the sidelines, it looked as though it could be a perfect opportunity for the giant but an injury of his own scuppered that. Caballero was signed on a free, short-term deal to plug the gap left and Hasenhuttl has hinted that he is a fan of the 40-year-old Argentine enough to keep him at the club even longer, with his contract expiring at the start of January. However, following the 3-2 victory at West Ham’s London Stadium, it appears as though Forster is his clear pick to take the gloves. Speaking to the Daily Echo, Hasenhuttl said: “Yeah (he had a shaky start), but I am happy that he can celebrate immediately a win with us. “It is good that he’s back fit.” He continued: “Willy was a good replacement for the last two matches but it was clear that when Fraser was fit today he starts, and he took his chance. “He was an important goalkeeper for us today.” Forster struggled early on with a couple of deliveries into the area, and required a quick clearance from Jan Bednarek to prevent a goal that would have been the former England international’s fault, having flapped at the cross. But he and Saints managed to hold on and secure only a third win on the road in the Premier League all calendar year – with Forster starting in net for the first, at Sheffield United back in March, too. Forster’s appearance at London Stadium was his 116th in the Premier League, and he’s kept 39 clean sheets in those.
Alex McCarthy Southampton

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl provides update on Fraser Forster and Alex McCarthy injuries #SAINTSFC

ALEX McCarthy is set to miss up to four weeks with a hamstring injury, boss Ralph Hasenhuttl confirmed. The club's first-choice keeper this season suffered the problem during last weekend's 1-1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion. The 32-year-old played on despite the injury, conceding a 98th-minute equaliser to Neal Maupay. And Hasenhuttl confirmed McCarthy will now spend some time on the sidelines. Second choice Fraser Forster is also unavailable for Saturday's trip to Arsenal, meaning new signing Willy Caballero, who was this week drafted in as a free agent, looks set for his debut. "Alex is out for three or four weeks," said Hasenhuttl. "Fras tried this week, but it’s still a bit too early for him, so he will also still not make it to the game. "That’s the reason why we signed Willy and we are happy to have him here." Asked to explain the nature of Forster's injury, Hasenhuttl added: "Fraser Forster tried it this week. He has a problem near his hamstring or his hip muscle. "It would be for the weekend I think a little bit too early, but he will not be that long out."
Alex McCarthy Southampton

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl delighted with competition between Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster #SAINTSFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl is keeping faith with Alex McCarthy but sends a message to his squad: “Players who did not show their best performances now have to show up because three games not good in a row is definitely really not helpful to stay in the team.” The 31-year-old former England international will have been left disappointed following both headed goals from Teemu Pukki and Grant Hanley at Norwich during the 2-1 defeat last weekend. Speaking ahead of the visit to Liverpool, boss Hasenhuttl was asked about what pressure Fraser Forster is putting on the number one shot-stopper. McCarthy has posted five clean sheets in 12 matches so far during the 2021-22 Premier League campaign with some impressive saves to boot. Read more That’s why the Austrian has been assured in his faith in the former Reading keeper, but he has stated that three disappointing performances could be enough for any member of his squad to lose their shirt. Alex McCarthy has started every Premier League game this campaign (Pic: Stuart Martin) Assessing the McCarthy and Forster competition, he said: “Everybody is under pressure from somebody else otherwise we wouldn’t be doing our job. “This is not only he goalkeeper but he has to feel that ‘there is somebody putting pressure on me and I have to bring the best performance’. “Alex didn’t show the best performance last week, there is no discussion about it, he knows it, I know it, everybody knows it. “On a normal day he makes the saves for the two goals, this he knows. This is the crucial situation for a goalkeeper, if he makes a mistake it is a goal. We can blame McCarthy all we want, but if we score more in the first half the match is killed. #saintsfc — Erik Franzo (@EFranzo17) November 20, 2021 Hasenhuttl continued: “But I remember also this season in the Watford game he had an unbelievable save to win us three points there, and he had also a few more games where he has unbelievable saves to keep us in the game. “He has done a fantastic job this season so far, this is why I am happy but on the other side it would be the same if Fraser was my number one goalkeeper and Alex is putting pressure on him. Fraser Forster performed well during the EFL Cup contests (Pic: PA) “I know that after one bad game changing it immediately would be horrible because the last thing you want to do is confuse them and not give him trust, but he has to show up – he also knows that one bad game can sometimes happen but you have to immediately show up. “It is not only him but there was a few players who did not show their best performance and they now have to show up because three games not good in a row is definitely really not helpful to stay in the team.”

#PLStories- #FraserFoster and other Saints players excited to see fans return to St Mary’s #SAINTSFC

SAINTS players are excited to see supporters finally return to St Mary's tomorrow evening after five long months away. A limited number of fans were permitted for two home matches in December, when Saints beat Sheffield United before losing to Manchester City. But after tighter coronavirus restrictions were subsequently introduced, no supporters have been allowed in to St Mary's since. That will all change tomorrow night, with 8,000 permitted for the visit of Leeds United, Saints' final home game of the season. "Obviously it will be huge to have the fans back in," goalkeeper Fraser Forster told the Daily Echo. "It will be fantastic. It’s been a long season so having the fans back will be great and hopefully we can put in a good performance for them in that game." Nathan Tella notched his first senior Saints goal in front of the empty St Mary's stands on Saturday, in a 3-1 win over Fulham. Looking ahead to the prospect of adding to his tally with supporters in attendance on Tuesday night, Tella said: "If I can get another goal it would be a great feeling. "I’m just happy that the fans are going to be back, because they're massive. Bring on Tuesday!"
