#PLStories- Chris Mepham says win at Saints was for Cherries ‘fans who have stuck with us’ #AFCB

Historically, Cherries have a wretched record away to their south coast rivals. This week’s win marked just a second time Cherries have won away at Saints, the first coming on their last trip their in September 2019. Since that day, Saints had racked up three successive wins over Cherries, all at Vitality Stadium, the hosts failing to find the net. Mepham has now visited St Mary’s three times since joining Cherries from Brentford four years ago. He started, only to be withdrawn early on during a 3-3 draw there in April 2019, before remaining as an unused substitute for the 3-1 win in September that year. The centre-back played a key role in the 1-0 win on Thursday night, which came four years to the day since he was hooked at the same stadium. Defeat left Saints rooted to the foot of the table, six points from safety. 🍒 Celebrations in full swing #afcb pic.twitter.com/cyuSQwsonz — Tom Crocker (@TomCrockerEcho) April 27, 2023 Discussing this week’s win and being part of some good days for Cherries at St Mary’s, Mepham told the Daily Echo: “I remember getting dragged after 30 minutes away from home, so other than that day! “For the fans, there’s always a little bit more on this game. “For us as players, we approach it the same as any other game, but in the background we know there is obviously that local rivalry, so I think it was important to get the win for the fans that obviously have stuck with us all this season.” While Marcus Tavernier’s goal was all that separated the sides, Cherries were the better side for the majority of the contest on Thursday. However, having failed to put the game to bed, they had a nervy wait at the death when substitute Che Adams slammed home, only for the strike to eventually be ruled offside. “I think that’s the thing we need to get better at,” Mepham explained. “For all our dominance in the first half and the way we controlled the first half, we probably didn’t create enough clear-cut opportunities. “We seemed to arrive in the final third a lot, but then it was a case of second half, just finding a moment out of something to go and get us a goal. “Then it was down to us to see how well we can hang on. “Obviously other than that moment where Che Adams scores, I thought we limited them to very few chances. It probably felt like it was more pressure than they probably put us under.” Cherries return to action against Leeds United at Vitality Stadium tomorrow (2pm).

#PLStories- Chris Mepham thinks win over Leeds could get Bournemouth over the line #AFCB

A Marcus Tavernier goal earned Cherries a 1-0 victory at Southampton on Thursday night, a result which moved Gary O’Neil’s men seven points clear of the relegation zone with just five games to play. Many pundits believe the 36 points Cherries have already amassed will be enough to avoid the drop, with O’Neil’s charges now sitting 14th in the table. But the head coach and squad and eyeing victory over another side battling to avoid the drop in Leeds at Vitality Stadium this weekend, to all but rubber-stamp a second consecutive top-flight campaign for Cherries. Discussing the win over Saints being a huge step in Cherries achieving their goal, Mepham told the Daily Echo: “That’s exactly what the manager said at the end of the game. “We are so close now. Credit to us, we’ve put ourselves in an unbelievable position. I think that’s our third away win in a row now. “We’ve done our bit. We just need to keep pressing, get us over the line on Sunday hopefully. “I think the last thing we would want now is complacency. There are still lots of points up for grabs. “We want to finish as high as possible and the relegation fight isn’t done yet. We go into Sunday wanting to win and hopefully we can get over the line then.” He added: “It’s not done yet. Until it’s mathematically impossible for us to go down, we will still be fighting for every point. “Sunday is no different. We will approach it like we do every game, which is wanting to win and hopefully we can get a result on Sunday.” Reflecting on the victory at St Mary’s, Mepham said: “Massive win. Especially the way the drama was at the end (Che Adams disallowed goal). Obviously panic stations at the end when you think you’ve lost two points. “I think we thoroughly deserved the points. First half, complete control. Second half, I think they were always going to come out and put a lot more pressure on us and play higher up the pitch. “Sometimes you need a bit of luck, like we got at the end and I felt like we deserved that with the way we applied ourselves in the first half.” Asked how impressive the win was given Cherries had just suffered a 4-0 home defeat to West Ham United a few days earlier, Mepham said: “To be honest, Sunday felt like a bit of an anomaly for us. “I think the way we’ve performed the last couple of months, that performance on Sunday was very unlike us. “We knew we had so much more to offer. Then again (on Thursday) it was a case of bounce back and I thought we did that really well. We started the game well. “I think the first 10 minutes they came out quite quick, but once we settled into the game, we had control and it’s a perfect response.”

#PLStories- Former Brentford player Chris Mepham on his improvement at Cherries since last Brentford trip #AFCB

A TRIP to Brentford is always likely to evoke memories for Chris Mepham. The 25-year-old got his break in professional football with the Bees, making 48 appearances before exiting to join Cherries in 2019. But his last visit to the west London club added a new, unwanted chapter in his association with Brentford. With Cherries 2-1 up on aggregate and on course to reach the Championship play-off final, Mepham slipped and hauled down Bryan Mbeumo as he bore down on goal. The Wales international was duly sent off, leaving the Bees with an extra man for the last hour of the contest. They took full advantage, progressing 3-2 over the two legs, before going on to win the Wembley play-off final. Mepham has since spoken openly about how tough mentally that day in May 2021 was to deal with. Now, 20 months on, the centre-back prepares to return to the Gtech Community Stadium as a Premier League player again with Cherries. Asked in an interview with the Daily Echo if Saturday offers an opportunity to fully put to bed that play-off game, or if it is already a long way from his mind, Mepham said: “Obviously we haven’t been back there since, so naturally going back for the first time since that happened, I wouldn’t say it’s 100 per cent gone. “But I feel like I’m a very different person and a very different player now than I was when that mistake happened. “I feel like since then, I’ve had some big, important games I’ve been involved in with the World Cup and I’ve fortunately had a very good run of games here and I feel like I’ve been putting in good performances. “I’d say with that, I’m in a very different place now than back then when that mistake happened. “But I think I’m very much going into the game wanting to put that right and make sure I give a good performance. To me, I’m going into that game no different to any other Premier League game.” Asked if he is proud of the way he has responded since that setback, to become first choice for both club and country, Mepham added: “Of course I’m not happy that happened on that day, because just mentally and emotionally, you don’t come away from that situation feeling good about yourself. It did take a fair few days to come back around. “But at the same time, when a situation like that happens, it’s important that you don’t go the other way and go into your shell and I think when stuff like that happens it’s a real test of character. “I think it was important I responded in the right way. I think since then, last season was difficult for me with limited opportunities. “But I like to think, when I did come on and Scott Parker brought me on to have a positive impact, I’d like to think I did do that. “I’m really pleased with the way I responded to that particular day, because as you can imagine, it takes a big dent out of you. Since that moment, I feel like it’s been really positive for me.” It has been a tough few weeks for Cherries. Since the World Cup break, they have lost all five of their matches, culminating in a 4-2 defeat to Championship Burnley in the FA Cup on Saturday. Reflecting on the defeat to the Clarets, Mepham, who was an unused substitute, said: “It was obviously a difficult one to take. “I felt like in the second half against United we had a really good performance. We obviously conceded a couple of goals, but there was lots of positives to take from that game into the Burnley one. “I think Burnley was an opportunity for us to get back to winning ways and get confidence back in the team and take that momentum then back into the league. “It was difficult, the performance wasn’t good enough. I think the nature of the goals really. I don’t think we got cut open by Burnley at all, three goals come from our mistakes. “I think at any level, if you make mistakes like that, you’re going to get punished. I think that was the real disappointing thing." He continued: “Marcos (Senesi) for the first goal, he’s probably one of our most technical players in the team. He’s the guy that sometimes we give the ball to to start our attacks, because we know he’s got a huge amount of quality on the ball. “I think it’s just very unlike him for that goal, unlike Lewis Cook to receive the ball on the half turn and lose it. “They’re the players that all season haven’t done mistakes like that. Everyone is going to make mistakes, I think it was just a case of it all seemed to happen in the same game, which is obviously a real negative for us. “But you could argue that’s behind us now and hopefully we don’t make mistakes like that, because over the course of the season it will kill you.” One player who received criticism at the weekend was captain Lloyd Kelly. After coming on at half-time, Kelly’s dallying on the ball led to some frustrations from the fans, with a section of the supporters booing the 24-year-old when he was in possession. Quizzed on how Kelly has responded to that this week, Mepham said: “Naturally, as a leader of the team, as the captain of the team, normally it’s his responsibility to get us going. “On Monday morning when we come in, try to get everyone going and have a chat and be positive. “But I think certainly after the game on Saturday and the abuse or the comments he suffered, I think it was important we were there for him. “He’s been top drawer since he came into the team last season. He plays week in, week out at a very high level and he’s been a big part of why we’re now back in the Premier League. “I think if we, as players, see one of our teammates hurt in a situation or suffering, it’s important for us to get behind him. “We’ve certainly done that this week and I’m in no doubt he’ll put all those critics behind him because he’s a top, top player and has been for us since he’s come in.” With the game against Brentford being a 5.30pm kick-off, there is a realistic chance Cherries could be in the bottom three by that time. Asked what his message is to the fans ahead of the weekend, Mepham said: “I think we need that support. “We need to head down there knowing exactly where we’re at in terms of that everyone is in it together. Whether we go 1-0 down, 1-0 up, we’ve got everyone behind each other. “The players are there, the staff are there, the fans are there backing us as they have done for many years. But I think that is really important, it’s not panic stations. “We’re currently outside the relegation zone and one or two wins can change everything – suddenly we’re top 10. “Of course it can go the other way and a couple of bad results, like we’ve experienced, suddenly brings you closer to the drop zone. “But I think we need to believe that we’ve got enough in this squad to produce wins in this league and hopefully that can start on Saturday.”
Mark Travers Bournemouth

#PLStories- Mark Travers ‘buzzing’ for Chris Mepham display at World Cup after ‘tough’ Cherries spell #AFCB #Worldcup2022

MARK Travers is “buzzing” to see Chris Mepham get a chance to showcase his talents on the world stage, after a “tough” spell out of the Cherries side. While Travers was playing week in, week out as Cherries clinched promotion from the Championship last season, Mepham was often forced to watch on and play a bit-part role. Having been sent off for a costly error in the play-offs the previous season, Mepham began the following campaign in the starting XI under new boss Scott Parker. But he slowly drifted out of the side, utilised as a late substitute to see out games, as Gary Cahill and Lloyd Kelly forged a strong centre-back partnership, before the arrival of Nat Phillips. Mepham made 22 league appearances last season, playing just over 1,000 minutes. He has already eclipsed that tally in his 14 Premier League outings this term. After Phillips and Cahill departed the club and Kelly picked up an injury, it gave the 25-year-old a run in the team. The former Brentford man’s future at the club looked uncertain as he entered the final year of his contract, but his early season form was rewarded with a new deal to extend his stay until 2025. Now, Mepham is in Qatar, competing in the World Cup with Wales. He played the full 90 minutes of Monday’s 1-1 draw with USA and will be hoping to keep his spot for Friday’s crunch clash against Iran (10am). “Massive credit to Meps,” goalkeeper Travers told the Daily Echo. “He has come in this year and been a massive, massive player for us in the centre of defence. “He’s been class. It was obviously tough, he didn’t play much last season, but it just shows you the type of person he is to come in this season and claim his spot in the team and do brilliantly. “So I’m buzzing for the two lads away with Wales. “I’ll be rooting for them, because it will be a tough group but I think they’ll do really well and they’re excited for it.” Travers himself has been on the international stage, making three senior appearances for Republic of Ireland. They failed to qualify for Qatar, finishing third in their group behind Serbia and Portugal. “It would’ve been nice to get to a World Cup, obviously, but hopefully in the future that can happen,” said Travers. “But of course I’m rooting for all the lads really. “We work day in, day out together. “It’s a dream for them (Mepham and Kieffer Moore) to go to a World Cup, so of course you want to see them do well and win games. “It’s really exciting for them.”

#PLStories- Chris Mepham says ‘People are starting to notice’ Kieffer Moore’s technical ability #AFCB

CHRIS Mepham believes his teammate for club and country, Kieffer Moore, is finally getting his dues for his technical ability, rather than just his physical qualities. Mepham and Moore are currently away on Wales duty for the World Cup in Qatar, with the pair facing the USA in their Group B opener this evening (7pm). The duo have been a revelation at club level this campaign, Chris Mepham stepping out of the shadows to become ever present after spending last season on the fringes of Scott Parker’s squad. Meanwhile, Moore has featured in some capacity in every league game this term, bagging four Premier League goals during his top-flight debut. Moore has received a lot of plaudits for utilising his frame and physique to the best of his abilities, but his teammate Mepham believes other aspects of his game go under the radar. Speaking about Moore on the club’s official podcast, the 25-year-old told afcb.co.uk: “I think he is quite deceiving. “People almost think, because he’s six-foot five, that all he can do is bully people, good in the air. “But I think he is very, very good technically as well. “People are starting to notice that. “It’s something that he’s added to his game well. “He can do both sides of it really – when the ball is going into him, he can deal with it, and he can be that brute that gets his head on things, and bring other players into the game.” Asked what Moore was like off the pitch, Mepham shared: “I wouldn’t say he’s that mysterious a man – what you see is what you get. “To be fair, his dress sense, I don’t mind. I’m not a massive lover, but I also don’t hate it.” You can listen to the full podcast with Mepham by visiting afcb.co.uk, where he discussed his footballing journey and his World Cup call-up.

#PLStories- Chris Mepham dreaming of starting Wales World Cup opener #AFCB

CHERRIES defender Chris Mepham believes he has given himself “the best possible opportunity” to start Monday’s World Cup opener for Wales. After some tough spells at Cherries, with high profile errors, injuries and being left out of the team, Mepham has risen to the challenge this season and been a staple of the team’s top-flight XI. He had started all of Cherries’ Premier League matches this season, playing all-but eight minutes, until missing Saturday’s win over Everton due to suspension. Mepham will be looking to add to his 33 caps in Qatar, with Wales set to get their campaign underway against USA on Monday. They will then face Iran and England in Group B. The 25-year-old is set to compete with the likes of Ethan Ampadu, Tom Lockyer, Joe Rodon and Ben Davies for a starting centre-back berth under boss Rob Page. “First and foremost, I want to play,” Mepham told Sky Sports. “I think I’d be lying if I said otherwise. You come here and it’s such a big stage. “For me it will be a dream to play on this stage. “My form has been good going into it. I’ve had a good run of games, which is something that I’ve always asked for. “I’ve given myself the best possible opportunity to be in that starting XI come Monday.” Asked if progressing out of the group is what Wales have in their sights, Mepham said: “100 per cent, that’s the first thing we’re looking at. “Come out the group, and see where that takes us. We’re more than good enough, we all know that.” The warm weather in Qatar has been a talking point this week, with temperatures upwards of 30 degrees. Discussing how difficult that is making preparations, Mepham said: “It’s tough. Playing in England, it’s obviously a very different climate, different altitude. “But I think where we’ve had warm weather camps in the past, we went to Portugal before the Euros, you kind of try and acclimatise yourself to it. “Naturally it’s going to be tougher. You’re going to need to get fluids on board a lot and I’d imagine there could be (drinks) breaks, I’m not sure. “But we just need to give a good account of ourselves and try and not let the weather and climate affect us.”
Gary O’Neil

#PLStories- Gary O’Neil reveals he is a ‘big fan’ of Chris Mepham #AFCB

INTERIM boss Gary O'Neil heaped praise on in-form Chris Mepham, admitting: "I've liked him since the moment I got here." O'Neil joined Cherries as a first-team coach, working under Jonathan Woodgate, in February 2021. Since August 30, O'Neil has been working as interim head coach, after Scott Parker was sacked. During O'Neil's tenure, Mepham has not missed a minute of action. He has played a key role in clean sheets against Brentford and Wolves, as well as helping Cherries pick up points on the road at both Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United. The 24-year-old has also seen his centre-back partner change in that time, with new recruit Marcos Senesi stepping in for the past two fixtures, due to an injury to captain Lloyd Kelly. Asked if he has seen a change or boost in confidence around the place from Mepham in recent weeks during his fine run of form, O'Neil told the Daily Echo: "I’ve always liked him. I’ve liked him since the moment I got here. "Of course he suffered tough moments a while back, that you do as footballers. I spoke to Meps again (last Saturday) before the (Brentford) game around how important he was for me, how good he’s been, having to play next to a new signing now who hasn’t played in England in Marcos Senesi and Meps’s role in helping him. "To be fair to Marcos he’s stepped up as well. "So I’m a big fan of Meps. I loved him again (against Brentford). I thought he was really, really good defensively against a tough centre-forward (Ivan Toney)." Asked if he feels Mepham is developing into a leader at the back, O'Neil added: "I think I’m just really keen for Meps to show what he is. "When I speak with him, it’s like ‘yeah mate, I have full trust in you. I love how you defend, I love how you are with the ball, let’s go again mate’. "We’re going to have bad moments, of course. "When I played I had probably more bad games than I did good. But they come, you brush them off, you go again. "So really pleased with Meps, pleased with Marcos. Pleased with them all really." Discussing Senesi and Mepham's blossoming partnership, O'Neil added: "To go into a Premier League season and to lose someone as good as Lloyd Kelly and then to play Newcastle and Brentford, two real sides that look to test you defensively for Meps and Marcos, and all the boys to be honest, not just them, to produce two real solid defensive displays. "We were unlucky to concede at Newcastle, we didn't concede against Brentford. "So from that standpoint I’m pleased." Cherries host Leicester City on Saturday (3pm).
