Rafa Benitez believes Farhad Moshiri and the Everton board know they must end a run of hiring and firing managers. Moshiri has fired four managers since arriving at the club in 2016 while Carlo Ancelotti sensationally quit last summer. Benitez replaced the Italian but after an encouraging start to the season, finds himself under mounting pressure ahead of the 239th Merseyside derby. Benitez believes that “stability” is at the forefront of Moshiri’s thinking.
Rafa Benitez said: “I am in constant communication with the board and Mr Moshiri so I have this feeling that that they realise that they were changing managers in the past – even changing the profile of the managers in the past – and it was not working. So they know that we need stability and they know that is really important for changing things in the future so you can’t blame the owner for spending a lot of money. It is just that we have to be sure we do things right in the future and the reason why we can’t spend now is because the Premier League rules don’t allow us to do that. So hopefully we can manage in a better way, we can sell some players at a profit and we can use this money to improve the squad and to ensure we are stronger. I think they [the board] realise the over the years that changing managers, changing the way to do things is not right, it is not productive, and hopefully we can keep this stability.”
Moshiri gave Koeman and Silva 18 months in the job before sacking them while Allardyce’s reign came to an end halfway through his contract. Benitez is less than six months into his tenure as Everton boss and believes Moshiri understands that he needs time.
Rafa Benitez added: “But he’s clever enough, he realised that maybe that was not the way and then he’s trying to find a better way to make sure we are stronger and we can keep this stability.”
