Brentford have confirmed that goalkeeper David Raya will be out of action for ‘between four and five months after sustaining a knee injury in the Premier League match against Leicester City. The Spaniard sustained the injury in a second-half challenge with City forward Ayoze Perez as the Spaniard attempted to get on a through ball in the closing stages of the 2-1 win. Goals from Youri Tielemans and James Maddison ensured that City came away from the game with a valuable three points and their third win in a row in all competitions following victories over Manchester United and Spartak Moscow. In an update on the club’s website, Brentford’s head of medical Neil Greig explained the extent of the injury.
Neil Greig said: “David has unfortunately sustained an injury to the Posterior Cruciate Ligament in his left knee. The issue will require a prolonged period of time to heal and for David to then regain function and strength around the joint,” he said. Positively, this type of injury usually heals well without the need for surgery. David has already begun using a brace specifically designed to aid this process. We anticipate the recovery period for an injury like this to be somewhere between four and five months, which will enable David to be back to his previous high levels well before the end of the season.”
The prognosis means that the goalkeeper stands a chance of making it back in time for the reverse fixture, when the newly-promoted side visit the King Power Stadium on March 19. Raya has made an impressive start to life in the Premier League, keeping three clean sheets in his first nine games.
