Morgan Gibbs-White’s excellent loan spell is turning heads at Wolverhampton Wanderers, including that of head coach Bruno Lage. For the second successive summer Wolves decided to loan out Gibbs-White to a Championship club and he’s been a roaring success at Sheffield United so far. Gibbs-White has managed three goals and two assists in his opening eight games for the Blades, while WhoScored have given him an average rating of 6.96. The only blotch on the 21-year-old’s record at Bramall Lane came on Tuesday when he was sent off in their 2-1 defeat to Millwall. Aside from that, Gibbs-White has been immensely popular with Blades fans and head coach Slavisa Jokanovic, who has given the England under-21 starlet the regular football he requires. Inevitably, Gibbs-White’s good form has led to suggestions that Wolves could exercise their recall clause in January – but Lage isn’t paying much attention to that at the moment.
Bruno Lage said: “Look, even if someone comes, we will take the best decision for us and for the player also,”
Fortunately for Sheffield United, Lage views Gibbs-White as a wide forward in his 3-4-3 system, not in midfield where Wolves don’t possess as many options. Gibbs-White faces competition from Adama Traore, Hwang Hee-chan, Francisco Trincao and Daniel Podence for a place in Wolves’ starting XI, which means recalling him makes little sense unless an injury occurs between now and January.
Bruno Lage added: “I am very happy with Morgan. I don’t look at him in the same way I look at Luke [Cundle – U23 player], I look at him as a main player. In the same way when Hwang [Hee-Chan] came to the club, he felt maybe he wasn’t going to have as much chance to play, so we took the decision to loan him and we are very happy with him. Every time we look at the players who are out on loan and every time we are watching the things Morgan is doing. He is working hard and is a very good player. We are happy with the way he works with us and also the way that he works with Sheffield United.”
