Chelsea’s resilient defence has helped them climb to an early lead in the Premier League this season. The Blues have only conceded three goals in seven games so far as they’ve raced to 16 points from a possible 21. There’s obviously method to Tuchel’s structure, as he explained after Chelsea’s hard-fought draw with Liverpool in August.
Thomas Tuchel said: “With pure will, with resilience. Team effort at its very best. Never lose the shape, try to close the half spaces. It was clear that we would suffer but you can do it. You can make life very, very hard. Of course, you need a bit of luck.”
And according to former Premier League defender, Michael Dawson, Chelsea’s defence doesn’t get the credit it deserves.
Michael Dawson said: “Reece James, Alonso the other side, Chilwell who they paid big money for, Azpilicueta you captain the team at his age you play, wherever you play, he slots in and that’s why he’s captain. He’s done it many years. Mendy in goal. You sign Lukaku for that sort of money but fundamentally you have to keep the ball out of the net and defenders don’t get the credit they deserve because the attacking players get paid all the money, credit. Defenders – without them you wouldn’t the success at the top of the field.”
