England Under-21 captain Marc Guehi says he is loving working with former Premier League defenders Ashley Cole and Joleon Lescott while on international duty. The duo have joined Lee Carsley’s coaching staff and have been helping to put the players through their paces as they bid to qualify for the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. For centre-back Guehi, learning from the pair has been invaluable, and speaking to the media ahead of England’s match against Slovenia on Thursday the defender said he was trying to soak every bit of information possible out of the duo.
Marc Guehi said: “Honestly, for me it’s fantastic. As a defender to have those two, who have done so much in the Premier League and over their football careers, coaching us and sharing their knowledge with us is fantastic. You learn a lot from them. I think they both still have it a little bit, it’s fantastic to be able to experience that and be a part of that. From the last camp, from the very first day, it’s a very cliche thing to talk about clean sheets as a defender and wanting to do that, but they really drilled into us how much it means to them and how much it should mean to us as defenders as well,” he added. There are so many instances where we’re doing drills from blocking crosses and positioning off crosses and getting up to shots and a lot of communication, which is what they want, they really shared a lot of with us.”
