David Moyes has criticised Angelo Ogbonna for the challenge he committed in injury-time that led to Yoan Wissa’s late winner for Brentford.
David Moyes said “Yeah, I thought it was,” Moyes replied when asked if the tackle was a silly one. I thought the player should never have been able to wriggle away from the byline. I think a couple of players were involved and we gave away a free-kick, which was stupid. Let’s be fair, for most of the time in the second half we were aggressive, aggressive in our play trying to create and make opportunities, so there wasn’t an awful lot we had done wrong in the second half but that certainly wasn’t so good in the end.”
Ogbonna took to social media to express his feelings over the defeat: “Very disappointed for the result yesterday,” he wrote. Before adding “After the break we go again.” Ogbonna has not been named in Roberto Mancini’s Italian squad to take on Spain in the UEFA Nations League semi-finals this week so the defender has a 14-day break before returning to action.
Once the international window is done, West Ham face a hectic period before the final set of World Cup qualifiers in November. The Hammers will play seven matches in a 21-day period between October 17 and November 7 and Moyes will need Ogbonna back to his best for some huge matches.
