Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Connor Ronan has revealed that his loan move to St. Mirren almost didn’t happen as he strived to recover from injury in time. The 23-year-old suffered a broken metatarsal during his loan spell at Swiss side Grasshopper last season and spent the entire summer recuperating from the painful injury. The playmaker was unlikely to get any game-time in the Wolves first team this season, so a loan move to another club was necessary for him to get minutes. A former Republic of Ireland youth international, Ronan was thrown straight into action for Saturday’s eventful 0-0 draw with Dundee United, with the midfielder starting his first game in four months.
Connor Ronan “I’ve had a few spells in League One and abroad, and coming back from the injury, it was touch and go whether I’d be fit enough to get out again before the deadline. The gaffer (Goodwin) had been in touch with me throughout the window, checking how I was and to see if the deal would be on if I was fit. So that was a positive sign. There were a few English clubs, but there was only one club interested throughout the window nailed on they wanted me to come. That was the most positive thing and helped me make my mind up. Thankfully we got there just in time.”
Ronan added that the success of his compatriot Jamie McGrath at the same club last season inspired him. McGrath received an Ireland call-up for the most recent international break due to his sizzling form for the Buddies.
Connor Ronan said: “You see Jamie McGrath getting into the Irish team from playing week in, week out, which is another factor for me in coming here. That’s one of my goals too, to get into the Irish set-up. So the exposure here will hopefully be good for me too. When I came in and signed, it was all a bit hectic, and we weren’t sure if Jamie was staying or going. But it’s definitely a positive that we’ve managed to keep hold of him, and hopefully, he will stay for the whole season, and we can benefit from that. He’s similar to myself in that he likes to get on the ball, and we had a few times on Saturday when we linked up. Hopefully, when I get to where I need to be fitness wise, then we can start to dictate the game a bit more.”
