Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Romain Saiss was left trapped in a hotel with his Morocco teammates amid an attempted coup in the capital of Guinea. The 31-year-old Wolves defender has detailed the whole experience he and his teammates went through.
Romain Saiss said “All day long, we saw cars full of armed soldiers at the bottom of our hotel, it was not war, but almost. We could hear gunshots, some players thought it was fireworks. We were then again explained that a coup was carried out by special forces and that’s when we really became aware of the situation. From our windows, we could see soldiers running with some sort of rifle. We thought we were in Call of Duty. “
Saiss was away on international duty as Morocco were due to take on Guinea in a World Cup qualifier on Monday. The match was eventually postponed by FIFA and its African counterpart CAF, after the attempted military coup took place in the West African nation. The team and the staff including Saiss were then escorted to the Moroccan embassy in Guinea and later escorted to the airport on Sunday. The Moroccan team has since returned to their homeland.
