Tyrone Mings has spoken of his pride at being made the new Aston Villa captain as the new Premier League season kicked off.
Tyrone Mings said: “We didn’t start the first game of the season anywhere near where we wanted to, but the result doesn’t overshadow my overwhelming feeling of pride at being made captain of this great football club. Ever since I arrived I’ve been made to feel part of the club by everyone connected to it. You fans have treated me like one of your own. The manager has placed a lot of faith in me by signing me on loan & now entrusting me with the armband. So for that, I’m extremely thankful. I have tried to embody the strong principles and values that have run through @AVFCOfficial long before me, and will continue long after me. I’ve no doubt we will continue to make you fans proud, as footballers but also as role models.”
Mings will lead Villa out at Villa Park for the first time on Saturday, when the Lions welcome Newcastle United for their first home game of the new season. The Lions might’ve been beaten 3-2 by Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday, but England international Mings spoke of his immense pride at being handed the armband and the skipper duties following the departure of his predecessor and Three Lions teammate Jack Grealish. The centre half mightn’t have got off to the start of his captain’s reign that he’d have wanted to, but the honour of being granted the role was certainly not lost on him.
