Jurgen Klopp says he has “no doubt” that Jordan Henderson’s Liverpool future will be resolved by a new contract.
Jurgen Klopp said: “It is important but it will happen. We will sort it, however it will be. We will sort it out, no doubt about that. It will get sorted. I spoke to him yesterday (Thursday) and it looked like [it would be signed], yes.”
Chelsea swooped to bring Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge for £97.5m from Inter Milan this week, which was a new club-record for the Londoners. And while Klopp admits the slew of new contracts are viewed in the wider world as less spectacular than an assortment of big-money transfers, he is not worried about his side’s chances this term as they prepare for Norwich City on Saturday evening.
Jurgen Klopp said: “I’m not interested at the moment about what would be the team’s greatest achievement because I have no idea what is possible for us this season. We will try absolutely everything to be in the best possible position for us at the end of the season. Whatever that means. But being successful in the past is not the reason for being successful in the future, but it should not hinder you or deny you. It just gives you information. There are different players in this season already. Last year we brought in Thiago, who never played in front of a proper crowd at Anfield. Monday for a couple of minutes was the first time. Diogo Jota never played in front of a proper crowd, I’m not sure Taki Minamino did, maybe one or two games, Kostas Tsimikas never did, Ibou (Konate) never did. We all haven’t done that for a very long time so we are all really looking forward to that. If we can bring the full Liverpool Football Club package on the different pitches then we are not great to play against. That is how it is. If that’s how it is then let’s win a football game and if people are still not happy that the guy they know already for five years is scoring the goals, and think: ‘That’s a bit boring, I prefer a new guy to score the goals’, I can’t see that. We are not together because we were together when we won things. We are together because these players are in a really good moment of their career and we think we can be successful together. That’s why we are still together. We don’t stick together for the wrong reasons. We keep this squad together for the right reasons and try to improve it, which we did every year with a bit here and there. It’s just not as spectacular as our competitors are doing. Sorry for that.”
The Reds captain has seen his long-term career plans thrown into question this summer amid speculation of interest from both Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. Henderson has two years left on his current contract and initial discussions on an extension yielded little progress earlier this year. Liverpool continued their summer strategy of tying down key men to longer deals on Friday when Virgil van Dijk signed on until 2025, becoming the fourth high-profile member of the squad to do so following similar contracts for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho and Alisson Becker in recent weeks.
