New Tottenham arrival Cristian Romero has promised to give everything to the club after his switch to north London was confirmed on Friday. Following a lengthy process to bring the Argentine defender to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium throughout the summer, the 23-year-old finally became a Spurs player, penning a six-year-deal with the club. football.london understands that Tottenham have agreed to pay Atalanta, who only secured the services of the defender on a permanent deal earlier in the day, £42.5million. It has also been announced that Romero is set to don the number four shirt following the departure of Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld earlier this summer. Following confirmation of Romero’s arrival, the defender himself pledged his utmost commitment to the club.
Christian Romero said: “I’m very happy to be wearing this shirt and to come to this club. I want to thank the fans for all the messages. You wanted me here and I am here. Now I’ll try and respond and show faith that the club is showing in me. And I’m ready to start and give everything for this shirt. Come on you Spurs.”
Romero has become Spurs’ third signing of the summer window as he follows former Atalanta teammate Pierluigi Gollini in swapping Bergamo for north London. Transfer chief Fabio Paratici has also secured the signing of Sevilla youngster Bryan Gil. Ahead of his move to Spurs being announced, Romero also released a statement via his official social media accounts thanking Atalanta for his short spell with the club.
Christian Romero wrote: “Unfortunately the day has come that I never thought could come so soon. I say unfortunately because in Atalanta I found more than just a club, but a real family with which I was able to grow and fulfil some of my dreams as a child such as playing and winning with my national team. I thank the Percassi family who believed in me more than anyone a year ago, all my teammates, the coach, all the staff and managers. But above all I want to greet the Bergamo fans because they made me feel at home and welcomed me as one of them. I am sure that one day we will meet again and I promise you that you will have one more fan who will follow you in every match. Thanks for everything @atalantabc.”
