West Bromwich Albion have completed the signing of Alex Mowatt after his contract at Barnsley expired. The 26-year-old midfielder becomes the first signing of Valerien Ismael after following the head coach from Oakwell to The Hawthorns. Mowatt captained the Tykes to the play-off semi-finals under Ismael last season and pens a three-year contract with Albion. Barnsley confirmed on July 1 that Mowatt would be moving on despite their best efforts to keep hold of a player who has been a key player in his three seasons with them.
Barnsley statement said: “Despite the most lucrative deal ever offered to a Reds player, Mowatt has decided against extending his Oakwell career. The club would like to thank Alex Mowatt for his dedication and professional attitude, particularly as captain over the last two seasons and wishes him well in his future endeavours.”
Mowatt has bags of Championship experience having started his career at Leeds United, where he spent four seasons playing regularly in the second tier. In his second full season with Leeds Mowatt netted nine goals from midfield, while he managed eight for Barnsley under Ismael last term.
