Ferran Torres has moved to clarify his comments about Robert Lewandowski when he declared that Spain’s defenders would ‘eat’ the Polish striker. Speaking ahead of Spain’s draw with Poland, Manchester City winger Torres had been asked if he was concerned about facing the prolific Bayern Munich striker. Torres’ reply was a strange one,
Ferran Torres said: “No, he does not worry us. Our central defenders will eat Lewandowski.”
However, Torres did insist that Lewandowski is an idol,
Ferran Torres said: “Yes. He has been a benchmark in terms of work, consistency and about knowing what you want.“
After Spain took the lead, Lewandowski earned Poland a draw and they further saw his threat as he scored a wonderful goal against Sweden, but couldn’t prevent his country from finishing bottom of their Euro 2020 group. After two draws, Spain finally discovered their scoring touch with a 5-0 win over Slovakia, which featured a lovely flicked goal from Torres. That was enough to book their place in the last 16. And since then Torres has been asked about the Lewandowski comments, where he apologised for any offence caused.
Ferran Torres said: “I respect Lewandowski and all the forwards very much. He is a reference for me. If I offended someone I want to apologise.”
Torres also fielded questions on the mindset in the Spain camp going into a last-16 clash with Croatia, having finished second in their group behind Sweden.
Ferran Torres added: “The team is calm and working well, trying to achieve the objectives. The goal is a matter of time and in the end everything will pay off. We are calm from day one because we were working well and the reward had to come. We have to insist because on Monday we have a great final. It is going to be a very difficult match against the world runners-up. We are aware that we will have to work hard and from there try to win. In a Euro Cup you have to take penalties, but it is not something that worries us because we are working on it and we will surely get them soon.”
