Harry Kane is hoping to meet Christian Eriksen after the European Championship as the former Tottenham Hotspur player continues his recovery from the cardiac arrest he suffered in Denmark’s Euro 2020 game against Finland on Saturday. While the incident offered Kane and his England teammates a dose of. perspective, he said that his focus is now solely on sealing England’s progress from Group D tomorrow night. After the tournament, however, he is keen to spend time with a player he shared a dressing room with for seven seasons.
Harry Kane said: “It’s been difficult. Obviously to watch it last week and see it happen was really hard. Thankfully Christian is alive and seems to be doing well. I’ve not had any contact with him personally but my wife has spoken to his wife and from what I understand everything’s going in a good way. Obviously we’ve had to try and switch off from it and focus on the game but of course Christian is in all of our hearts. Not just our team but the whole football family. It’s a reminder of how quickly things can change in life. Never to take things for granted. We want to wish him well, wish him all the best. I hope to see him soon personally. Hopefully after this tournament we get to do that.”
Asked if he will pay any tribute to his former team-mate should he score against Scotland,
Harry Kane added: “I’ll have to score a goal first before I can think of anything like that. We’ll see what happens. Christian is a good friend. The most important thing is he knows we’re all thinking of him and obviously that he is getting better day by day.”
England manager Gareth Southgate has been boosted by Harry Maguire’s return to fitness. The Manchester United centre back is set to return against Scotland, possibly from the start despite Tyrone Mings impressing in Sunday’s 1-0 win.
Gareth Southgate said: “Harry will be involved tomorrow. The decision we’ve got to make is whether he’s ready to start but we’re really pleased with his progress. He’s trained with the team for four or five days now and had no reaction. Each session that he’s involved with he gets more confident and I think he’s on a really good path. Of course we want everybody available. It causes difficult decisions but at the moment this morning on the training pitch we had 26 players training and that’s a great situation for us to be in.”
