Manchester City goalkeeper Zack Steffen has escaped serious injury after being substituted on international duty at the weekend. Steffen, USA’s No.1, went down without any obvious contact in the second half of his country’s Concacaf Nations League final win over Mexico and looked in some discomfort. He was replaced but later took to the field again to join in celebrations after Christian Pulisic’s extra-time winner.
Zack Steffens said: “Not nice going off injured but I’m proud of how the boys held it down last night. Appreciate all the messages and support.”
Now, ahead of the US’s clash with Costa Rica, head coach Gregg Berhalter confirmed the City shot-stopper will miss the game, but he is not expected to be out for too long. Giving updates on Steffen and defender Bryan Reynolds,
Gregg Berhalter said: “They both have bone bruises on their knee, and it’s about a 10-day injury. They’re recovering and getting better but won’t be able to play the game.”
The positive news comes after Belgium confirmed that Kevin De Bruyne’s minor surgery went as planned at the weekend, and he has joined their squad ahead of Euro 2020. He is expected to miss their opening group game against Russia but remains in contention to feature later in the tournament.
