Former West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Alan Miller has died at the age of 51. Miller made more than 100 appearances for West Brom and also had a spell on loan at Birmingham City. He started out at Arsenal and was part of the squad that won the League Cup and FA Cup in 1993, followed by the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1994. He left the Hawthorns in 2000 to join Blackburn Rovers and later went on loan to Bristol City, Coventry and St Johnstone. Miller retired in 2003 due to a back injury.
West Bromwich Albion said: “We are desperately saddened to learn of the passing of former goalkeeper Alan Miller. Our thoughts are with Alan’s family and friends at this terribly sad time.”
Middlesbrough said in a statement: “The club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former goalkeeper Alan Miller.
Alan made over 50 appearances for the club between 1994 and 1997 and he was a promotion winner with us in 1995 when we returned to the Premier League. Alan sadly passed away at the age of 51 and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”
Plymouth also paid tribute, writing: “The club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Pilgrim Alan Miller. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
Miller’s former Arsenal team-mate Lee Dixon posted on Twitter
Lee Dixon said: “Devastated to hear the news that our team mate Alan Miller has passed away. He was one of life’s good guys. What a man. Heart of gold. RIP my friend.”
Former Gunners midfielder David Hillier wrote: “RIP Alan Miller, my great friend and teammate, taken way too soon, see you again someday for a beer.”
Ex-Middlesbrough midfielder Robbie Mustoe said: “Awful news, my teammate Alan Millar passed away today. So very very sad. What a super human, a great fun-loving man. Brilliant GK for Boro & one of the big personalities in our dressing room. Thanks for years of great memories, a pleasure to have known you. RIP Al.”
