Chelsea striker Timo Werner has defended his first campaign at Stamford Bridge despite being labelled as somewhat wasteful.

Timo Werner said “A clear no! I wasn’t being hard on myself with those words; that was simply the truth from my point of view. What can I say? I was disallowed six or seven goals because I felt I was an inch offside. If the line had been drawn differently by the VAR, then they could have decided on the same height. But all in all, I’m not dissatisfied. If someone had told me before the season, ‘you’re in double figures for goals and assists, you’re going to the top four, the FA Cup final and Champions League final’, I would have signed it straight away.”

Werner’s 12 goals put him joint-top of the Chelsea goalscoring charts for the campaign and whilst those numbers are not the most convincing, the 25-year-old has said that his fortune could be set to change heading into next season.

Timo Werner said “I scored twelve goals and provided 15 assists. That makes me the leader at Chelsea. I’ve improved a lot, especially in terms of assists. But, of course, every missed chance hurts. For years, I’ve been in the business of creating those chances, and I’m sure I’ll get there again. Next year, I’ll start from scratch, I’ll keep working hard, and maybe the football god will be a bit better with me next season.”

The German forward has endured an inconsistent season with the Blues following his big-money move from RB Leipzig last summer. He has not been as prolific in front of goal as many expected, with a few golden chances being spurned throughout the duration of the year. That has led to speculation that Thomas Tuchel could once again look to bolster his Chelsea attack in the summer transfer window. Often, Werner has cut a frustrated figure with the Blues but he has instead admitted that he is satisfied with his debut season and that it could have been even better had he not been denied by a handful of narrow refereeing decisions.
