Nuno Espirito Santo admits his four-year stint in Wolverhampton has made him fall in love with the city. The Portuguese managed his final Wolves game against Manchester United on Sunday and moves onto pastures new following a hugely successful period at Molineux. Back when Nuno arrived in 2017 Wolves were a mid-table Championship club, but within three years they were competing in a European quarter-final. Nuno claimed the Championship title and two successive seventh-placed finishes in the Premier League and leaves a hero to supporters.
Nuno Espirito Santo said: “It means a lot,” Nuno said. “It really means a lot. You don’t find out that you’re going to fall in love with something so that when things don’t go well, you are sad with passion. This is what we have felt every time we didn’t make it or came up short. We have felt this. This is incredible. You cannot expect it and it will stay forever. Wolverhampton is a place that I love. It’s a see you soon.”
Wolves’ statement on Friday, which landed just an hour after Nuno had finished a press conference, suggested the decision to part ways with the 47-year-old was mutual. However, there’s been growing tensions behind the scenes over the club’s poor form this season and his departure doesn’t come as a surprise to some insiders. Nuno didn’t want to be drawn on the details of his exit and instead thanked the club’s bosses for their support during his stay.
Nuno Espirito Santo added: “We arrived and we came from a club that says a lot to us as professionals. We arrived without knowing what we were going to find. And we found a club that since day one has given us vocal support and there was not one decision that we didn’t make together. There was always dialogue, always respect, and this will stay forever.”
