Liverpool was looking set to receive an end of season boost for their nightmare campaign. Left-back David Burrows and Jan Molby along with Ronnie Whelan took another step towards first-team selection by lasting 90 minutes of the reserve clash with Leeds.

The news was a massive relief for the struggling manager Graeme Souness who was under severe pressure to turn things around at Liverpool. He had burnt bridges with almost everyone at the club and had come out fighting against anyone who criticised his team or his management style. The only way for him to save his job at Anfield was to turn around their league form having already been eliminated from all the domestic and European competitions.
