Manchester United captain Harry Maguire hailed David de Gea’s ability to produce a big performance when it matters after the goalkeeper made a string of outstanding saves against Roma.
Harry Maguire said: “David pulled off some great saves, credit to David, he’s done that throughout his career and he’s produced a big performance for us at a big moment.”
United will now face Villarreal in the Europa League final in Gdansk on May 26 and having suffered four semi-final defeats in 15 months under Solskjaer, Maguire is delighted to finally be heading to a final.
Harry Maguire said: “I’m really proud, to overcome the semi-final stage, we fell short in lots of competitions [at this stage], but we put ourselves in a great position in the first leg. We knew tonight would be end to end, they threw everything at us, lots of bodies in the box, we knew it would be open, we had numerous chances, they had lots of chances as well, too many for my liking, they put a lot of balls into the box. Whoever we played [in the final] we’d have confidence, the confidence is growing in the team. For myself, all the lads, everyone involved in the club, the fans, it’s something to look forward to and something we need to make sure we’re competing in on a regular basis.”
Victory against the La Liga side at the end of the month will make sure United don’t go four years without a trophy and Maguire is determined to make sure finals and trophies become a regular occurrence again for this club.
Harry Maguire said: “We’re not just turning up at a final for sure, this club demands trophies and we demand trophies to play for this club. It’s something to look forward too but it will only be a good occasion if we go there and lift the trophy.”
