Jack Grealish has said Matt Targett ‘fully deserves’ his new Aston Villa contract after the full-back committed his long-term future to the club. Targett, 25, has put pen to paper on an extended deal that will keep him at Villa Park until 2025 having enjoyed a brilliant season. Taking to Twitter after the new deal was confirmed,
Matt Target said: “Absolutely buzzing to sign a contract extension! Can’t wait to keep on growing and helping the club get to where it wants to be!”
He becomes the latest Villa player to agree new deals over the course of the season, with Grealish, John McGinn, Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa secured to extended stays. Targett’s improvement this season has been clear for all to see and the former Southampton defender feels he is playing the best football of his career.
Matt Target said: “I think there were a lot of question marks over me leading into this season. I’m the first to admit that last season wasn’t my best season. Last summer I really had a look in the mirror – I wanted to be stronger both physically and mentally. This season has been my best season as a professional footballer. I’ve been consistent. I haven’t had any niggles that have kept me out of training and kept me out of games. Physically, I am in such a better place.”
