Terrible defending on set pieces meant that Everton gave away a point and handed their London opponents all three at home. Mabutt took the visitors in front in 27th minute but a wonder strike by Sansom brought Everton on the level. But an injury to Preid in the 31st minute meant that the balance of the Everton side was affected and they were punished heavily 12 minutes from time as Allen gave all three points to Spurs.
