Ben Davies has been talking about the “huge” inspiration Harry Kane is to the Tottenham Hotspur squad and his favourite north London derby memories.
Ben Davies said “I think we’ve turned a corner now and after a good run of results we want to go into this derby full of confidence and hopefully it can pan out to be a big game for us.”
Kane scored another two goals on Thursday night as Tottenham beat Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 in the Europa League round of 16 first leg. That made it 42 direct goal involvements in 37 matches for the striker this season, with 26 goals scored and 16 assists.
Ben Davies said “He’s huge inspiration. I think his goals speak for themselves this season with the amount he chips in for us, he’s a real talisman for the team. But also just around the place, he’s a very hard worker, very determined and when you have somebody like him leading the way, not just in terms of being such a big character, but also leading by example, he is very inspirational for everyone else. The stats speak for themselves in terms of how good he’s been this year but as a squad it’s quite hard for us to say [if he’s reached a new level] because we see the quality that he brings every single day. On the training pitch, we see his quality in so many games and it’s hard to say he’s taken a step up because he’s so good anyway. If he keeps up this form then it’s going to be another amazing season for him.”
This Sunday brings a game against the Gunners, who are currently seven points behind Spurs in the Premier League table, and Tottenham will be looking to finish about their rivals for the fifth consecutive season.
Ben Davies said “We don’t really get dragged too much into that as a squad because we focus on ourselves and hopefully that result of finishing better than them is as a consequence of us doing well,” he said. “Our aim this year is to win a trophy and to finish as high as we can.”
Davies has now been in north London for almost seven years and he was asked what his best memories of the derby are.
Ben Davies said “There’s two for me that stand out. The Carabao Cup at their place, we went to the Emirates, kept a clean sheet, won 2-0 and that was a special result because we celebrated in front of the away fans there. Also, when we beat them at Wembley 1-0 when Harry Kane scored because that was another good day for us, we were on a good run, we’d had a tough period as well so to win that one was special. Of course it’s always a big moment when we beat them because football is about rivalry and the passion that comes with it and if we beat them then it’s all the better.”
Spurs will travel to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday looking to continue their recent good form which has brought five consecutive victories in all competitions.
