Carlo Ancelotti said Everton played with “different courage” as they fought back to claim a 3-3 draw with Manchester United. The Blues were 2-0 down at half-time but scored two goals in the space of three second-half minutes to draw level. Ancelotti says his players were worthy of a point and felt the half-time scoreline did not reflect the balance of the game. And so he did not ask his players to change tactics for the second-half but, instead, alter their mindset.
Carlo Ancelotti said “Very pleased. I think at the end of the day, we didn’t deserve to lose. It is true, in the first-half we played a little bit shy but we didn’t deserve to be down 2-0. Of course, the second-half was a different game with different courage. We were a little bit shy in the first-half. We could create more problems upfront using our counter-attack. The first 20 minutes, until they scored, we were in the game as we wanted. We didn’t change tactics and the strategy was the same but we played with more courage. The first goal we scored we built up from the back properly as we wanted to do, as we didn’t do in the first-half. Of course, when we score in the last second of the game we are a little bit lucky but we deserved the luck.”
Scott McTominay put United back in front with 20 minutes to go but deep into time added on Dominic Calvert-Lewin pounced on a flick-on from Lucas Digne’s free-kick to equalise.
