Harry Maguire believes the complete performances of Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have been a huge factor in Manchester United’s recent run of form. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side currently sit second in the Premier League, just three points behind leaders Manchester City, who still have a game in hand. Having suffered a shock defeat to Sheffield United and drawn with Arsenal last week many feared the wheels could come off United’s unlikely title challenge, however, they responded in style by thrashing Southampton 9-0 on Tuesday night. United’s ruthless attacking play against Saints received huge praise however it is the back-to-back clean sheets which will probably delight Maguire the most. The United captain hailed Shaw and Wan-Bissaka for their excellent attacking contributions in midweek but is best pleased with the solidity they provide in defence.
Harry Maguire said: “Obviously, Luke and Aaron have been excellent of late. They’ve really picked up their attacking game and started to fly forward and create chances which is really important for the team. We know how big influence full-backs in the modern day have on the attacking side of the game, as well as the defensive side. First and foremost, they’re defenders for us and I’ve got to say they’ve been brilliant on that side of things. They don’t get beaten one-v-one which is really important, they’re stopping crosses and they’ve been defending the back-post really well. As a back-four, we’re working hard together. I have big demands on my full-backs, I am expecting them to fly forward but I also expect them to fly back as well. Luke has been great and Aaron was great at Arsenal last weekend and it’s really important that they keep up this form to help the team.”
