Liverpool manager Graeme Souness was preparing to axe Ian Rush for the first time during his time at Liverpool for the Christmas fixtures. Rush had become Liverpool’s record goalscorer in its history earlier that season and had scored nine goals for the Reds that season. Souness was under pressure after Liverpool’s 5-1 thrashing at Coventry and although he condemned the side for “Sunday league defending”, it was the striker Ian Rush who was most at risk.
