Pep Guardiola is optimistic about an improved Manchester City defence after seeing the start his team have made to the season. After being plagued by centre-back issues for the whole of the last campaign, the Blues brought in Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias this summer at a combined cost of more than £100m, while also kept hold of Eric Garcia despite the young defender wanting to join Barcelona. Dias has started every game he has been available for and Aymeric Laporte has come back to fitness in the last week, while John Stones and Taylor Harwood-Bellis have also chipped in with minutes.
Pep Guardiola said “We struggled a lot last season for the problems that we had with Vincent [Kompany] going to Belgium and an important injury for Aymeric Laporte, We were damaged for a demanding season and today with new players coming and Eric Garcia we have alternatives to use them in these positions. We have conceded few. Against Leicester we gave them three unnecessary penalties but in the other games the average was quite good. In every game we create more than the opponent and this is what we have to do.”
