Christian Eriksen, the Denmark midfielder, has provided an update on his health following a recent incident during an international friendly match against Ukraine. The 34-year-old, who previously suffered a cardiac arrest in 2021, was seen clutching his chest during the game, which led to the match being halted and subsequently abandoned. Despite the alarming situation, the Danish Football Union has confirmed that Eriksen is conscious and doing well, while further medical examinations are underway.
Christian Eriksen said: “As you can probably imagine, receiving a shock from my ICD has had a major impact on both me and my family, but I want to reassure everyone that this was a different situation from what happened in 2021. I am feeling good, and my recovery has already started. In addition to being grateful for the support and assistance of all the players and the medical team on the field, I am also incredibly grateful to the doctors who have cared for me and my heart over the years. Thanks to their expertise, my ICD did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it. For now, my focus is on recovering, spending time with my family, going on vacation, and playing football with my children.”
Denmark’s national team physician, Boesen, commented: “I spoke with Christian this morning, and he is doing well.”
Denmark’s manager, Brian Riemer, added: “Christian Eriksen waved to his team-mates as he left the pitch. A few minutes before he fell ill, he had had a tussle with Ruslan Malinovskyi and I thought that was why he looked so distressed, but I was wrong.”
The incident occurred during a friendly match in Odense, Denmark, on June 7, 2026, when Eriksen collapsed on the field. The match was subsequently cancelled as medical personnel attended to him. Eriksen, who moved to Wolfsburg last summer, has been a key figure for Denmark and has previously played for clubs like Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
This latest health scare has reignited concerns over Eriksen’s well-being, especially given his history with heart issues. However, his recent statements and the updates from the Danish Football Union and medical professionals provide reassurance about his current condition. The football community continues to rally around Eriksen, offering support and wishing him a swift recovery.
