Jurrien Timber
Arsenal’s defensive stalwart, JurriĆ«n Timber, has been dealt a significant blow as he is set to miss the 2026 World Cup due to a lingering groin injury. This injury initially cast doubt over his participation in Arsenal’s Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, where he was eventually deemed fit but only featured as a substitute. The Netherlands national team has now confirmed that Timber will not participate in the upcoming tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
A statement from the Netherlands international team said: “JurriĆ«n Timber misses the 2026 World Cup. The 24-year-old defender has not recovered sufficiently from a groin injury to take part in the World Cup in a medically responsible manner. In consultation with the medical staff, it has therefore been decided that Timber will leave the national teamās pre-camp in New York after the game against Uzbekistan. Weāre with you, JurriĆ«n.”
Timber’s replacement in the Dutch squad will be Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida, who was initially on the standby list. Geertruida had already featured in a 1-0 defeat to Algeria in a friendly match on June 3 and has now been officially confirmed as part of the squad.
The injury saga began in March during Arsenal’s home victory over Everton, where Timber sustained the groin injury. Initially, it was not expected to be a major concern. However, as the months passed without any appearances, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his frustration over the situation.
Mikel Arteta said: “Yes, thatās been probably the most difficult thing to manage.”
Ronald Koeman, the Netherlands’ national team coach, had also expressed his concerns about Timber’s fitness prior to the tournament. The decision to withdraw Timber underscores the importance of player health and the challenges that come with managing injuries at the highest level of football.
As the World Cup approaches, the Dutch team will have to adapt to Timber’s absence, while Arsenal will be hopeful for his full recovery ahead of the next season. This development highlights the unpredictable nature of football injuries and their impact on both club and international commitments.
