Roberto De Zerbi
Tottenham Hotspur is actively seeking to bolster their defense by targeting Premier League-proven players this summer. Under the guidance of head coach Roberto De Zerbi, the club is keen on signing Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke. De Zerbi, who played a pivotal role in saving Spurs from relegation last season, is looking to reunite with Van Hecke, a player he previously managed at Brighton.
Roberto De Zerbi said: “We fight. He’s actually older than his age. His level is high, higher than people think.”
Seagulls captain Lewis Dunk added: “It’s the biggest improvement I’ve ever seen in a player since this manager arrived and I love it. He will give you everything he’s got, every single day.”
Tottenham’s interest in Van Hecke comes as part of a broader strategy to address defensive vulnerabilities, having conceded 183 goals in the Premier League over the past three seasons. The club’s ownership, the Lewis family, has pledged further funds to support necessary changes, focusing on on-field improvements after years of prioritizing off-field matters. The club is also expected to finalize free transfers for left-back Andy Robertson and left-sided centre-back Marcos Senesi, with announcements anticipated following the opening of the Premier League transfer window on June 15.
Spurs’ pursuit of Van Hecke is driven by De Zerbi’s familiarity with the player and the Dutchman’s impending participation in the World Cup. Despite having a bid rejected by Brighton, Tottenham remains hopeful of securing the defender before the tournament. The deal’s success hinges on Brighton’s valuation of Van Hecke, who is entering the final year of his contract. Additionally, NAC Breda, Van Hecke’s former club, is entitled to a 7.5% cut of any transfer fee.
Tottenham’s transfer strategy has shifted towards acquiring players with Premier League experience, following previous market missteps. The club is also eyeing Manchester City winger Savinho, who joined the Premier League two years ago. As De Zerbi looks to solidify his squad, the potential arrival of Van Hecke raises questions about the future of Tottenham’s existing centre-backs, including Cristian Romero, Kevin Danso, Radu Dragusin, and promising talent Luka Vuskovic.
Romero’s future at the club remains uncertain, with potential departures looming after the World Cup. Meanwhile, Vuskovic, who impressed during a loan spell in Hamburg, faces a decision on whether to remain with Spurs or pursue further development opportunities elsewhere. De Zerbi has expressed confidence in Danso’s adaptation to his tactical style, indicating his continued presence next season.
Tottenham’s proactive approach in the transfer market aims to swiftly secure reinforcements for De Zerbi, particularly as the World Cup may impact the availability of players. The club’s commitment to strengthening its defense underscores its ambition to compete at the highest level in the upcoming season.
