Sunderland Stadium
Sunderland AFC has made a significant decision to revise its safe standing plans at the Stadium of Light following feedback from older fans. The club had initially planned to extend rail seating, which allows fans to stand during matches, to additional sections of the stadium. However, concerns raised by supporters, particularly those with mobility issues, have prompted the club to modify these plans.
John Marshall said: “I’ve had a hip replacement and a friend I sit with is 76 and has had both hips replaced and we would really struggle to stand for the best part of two hours. A number of the concerns you have raised were echoed by other supporters, including the impact on those who prefer to remain seated and those with mobility considerations. Having listened carefully to the feedback received, the Club has reviewed its plans for Block U18. The lower rows will remain as seating. The intention behind this revised approach is to strike a balance between improving safety in areas where supporters regularly choose to stand, whilst retaining seating for those who prefer or require it.”
John Marshall added: “I’ve thanked the club for listening to our concerns and I’m grateful they’ve been sensitive to our needs and have changed their plans. From the ownership down to Regis Le Bris and the players, there seems to be a real togetherness with the fans which is shown in this decision. Having listened to supporter feedback, we’ve revised our plans for block U18. I’m nearly 70 and I still like to stand, particularly at away games. Fans, particularly younger supporters, will always want to stand. It’s good this has been introduced in an official and safe way, but it’s also good to know those who can’t stand have been listened to.”
The club’s decision to revise its plans demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity and fan engagement. By retaining seating in the lower rows of Block U18, Sunderland AFC is accommodating the needs of fans who prefer or require seating due to health or mobility concerns. This move reflects the club’s dedication to ensuring a positive matchday experience for all supporters, regardless of their physical capabilities.
The introduction of safe standing areas, while popular among younger fans who prefer to stand, posed challenges for those unable to do so for extended periods. The club’s willingness to adapt its strategy in response to fan feedback highlights a collaborative approach to stadium management, ensuring that the diverse needs of its fanbase are met.
