Tyler Fletcher
Manchester United’s rising star, Tyler Fletcher, has been thrust into the spotlight after receiving a last-minute call-up to join Scotland’s squad for this summer’s World Cup. This opportunity arose following the unfortunate knee injury sustained by Napoli midfielder Billy Gilmour during Scotland’s final pre-tournament friendly. Fletcher, who recently made his senior debut for Scotland, will now head to the United States to participate in the prestigious tournament.
Kenny McClean said: “People speak about the future, but a lot of these young lads are the present. We have had a few in with us this week and I have been so impressed. Tyler came on, and I can’t speak highly enough of him. I said to the lads after his first session, ‘I can see something special in him,’ so I was glad he got on after the week he has had. In my first couple of Scotland squads I played with his dad. And, for me, in my first session, he [Darren] stood out a mile. Fortunately for Scotland, his son is pretty similar. There is a lot of potential there. It’s about using him in the right way.”
Fletcher’s inclusion in the World Cup squad marks a significant milestone in his burgeoning career. Initially, he joined the Scotland squad to train with the senior group, but his impressive performance in the friendly against Curacao and his consistent form in academy fixtures caught the attention of the national team selectors. His rapid ascent has been a source of pride for his family, including his father, Darren Fletcher, and his twin brother, Jack, who were present to witness his debut.
This call-up comes after a remarkable season for Fletcher, who was awarded the Denzil Haroun Reserve-Team Player of the Year at Manchester United. His performances have not only impressed the coaching staff but have also highlighted his potential to be a key player for both club and country. Former U21 boss Travis Binnion acknowledged Fletcher’s contributions, emphasizing his impact on games both with and without the ball.
Travis Binnion said: “He’s been outstanding. The fact is he gets into the best of the U21s on merit, like 100 per cent. He affects the game with the ball, the game without the ball and the game in the top third of the pitch. So yeah, underrated? Maybe because he hasn’t been with the first-team, and maybe because there are players who are a bit more eye-catching in the forward positions who maybe have numbers to support. But he’s not underrated by the staff, the club and the players.”
Fletcher’s journey to the World Cup is a testament to his perseverance and talent. His debut against Tottenham in February, under the guidance of manager Michael Carrick, set the stage for his subsequent appearances in the senior squad. Fletcher expressed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity, acknowledging the support from his teammates and coaching staff.
Tyler Fletcher said: “It’s a mad day, I’m absolutely buzzing. I’ve just got to thank everyone for supporting me, throughout the way. Not many people do it [make a debut]. I’m grateful it’s happened. To get on the pitch and play at Old Trafford is a special feeling.”
As Fletcher prepares for the World Cup, he not only represents a promising future for Scotland but also embodies the potential of Manchester United’s academy. His inclusion in the squad is expected to boost his confidence, providing him with invaluable experience on the international stage.
