Arsenal faced a challenging defeat against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in Budapest, with the match concluding 1-1 after extra time. PSG secured a 4-3 victory in the subsequent penalty shootout, marking their consecutive Champions League triumph. Gabriel and Eberechi Eze missed their penalties for Arsenal, while David Raya saved Nuno Mendes’ attempt for PSG. Ultimately, it was Gabriel’s missed fifth and final penalty that confirmed PSG as the champions. Following the match, Marquinhos, Gabriel’s Brazilian teammate, offered words of comfort to the distraught defender.
Marquinhos said: “As soon as he missed that penalty, I remembered what it felt like for me when I missed against Croatia to knock us out of the last World Cup. It was a very difficult moment for him, a big responsibility. I’ve been through it myself and know how tough it is when that happens to you as a player. You have to be very strong to get out of a moment like that – and I know how hard that is.”
Marquinhos continued: “Gabriel really wanted to win this title and had all that pressure on him, knowing that if he missed, that dream had gone for him and we would be the champions. So I just wanted to take a few minutes out of my celebrations to reserve this time for him, to hug him, to wish him to get better quickly. I told him that I’ve been through this moment and I know how difficult it is but that he can bounce back from it.”
Marquinhos added: “Gabriel has played an amazing season for Arsenal, proved he is one of the best defenders in the world and shown everyone he’s a great player. He did not deserve to have all that weight, of that moment of defeat, on his shoulders. And in Brazil, we need him for the World Cup. I just wanted to hug him, to show him how much he is valued by us and congratulate him for everything else he has done this season.”
The defeat was a bitter pill for Arsenal, who were on the brink of claiming Europe’s most prestigious club title. Gabriel, who has been an instrumental figure in Arsenal’s defense throughout the season, found himself at the center of a high-pressure moment that ultimately slipped away. Despite the setback, his remarkable performances have not gone unnoticed, and he remains a key player for both club and country.
As Gabriel and Marquinhos prepare to join the Brazil squad for the upcoming World Cup, the focus will shift to international duties. Gabriel will aim to channel his experiences from the Champions League into Brazil’s campaign, where they are set to face Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland in Group C. The support from teammates like Marquinhos will undoubtedly be crucial in helping him bounce back and continue to excel on the global stage.
