Jake O’Brien, the promising Everton defender, has been advised to remain with the club despite not playing in his preferred position. The 25-year-old has shown his prowess in the center of defense under manager David Moyes, yet has often been deployed as a right-back due to the team’s needs. This positional shift has been necessitated by Everton’s long-standing issues at right-back, a problem they aim to address this summer. Former Republic of Ireland international Andy Townsend believes Everton is the ideal club for O’Brien’s development at this stage of his career.
Andy Townsend said: “I think Jake O’Brien’s at the perfect club for him at this stage of his career, I like Jake. Whether or not he’s a right-back, it’s difficult for him sometimes as such a big man playing in those sorts of positions when he’s got Jeremy Doku running at him – like he did recently. Physically, he’s a proper unit in both boxes and I think Everton is absolutely the right size club for someone like Jake O’Brien at this stage of his career.”
Townsend emphasized the importance of playing time for O’Brien, noting that despite early challenges under former manager Sean Dyche, Moyes has frequently relied on him to fill the right-back position. This decision has been largely due to the injuries of Nathan Patterson and Seamus Coleman, making O’Brien a key player in addressing the club’s defensive needs.
Andy Townsend further stated: “Why leave a club where you’re playing more often than not and go somewhere to sit and watch just because it’s potentially a so-called better or bigger club? I think Everton’s perfect for him. Jake is playing consistently for Everton, and they are a consistent team. They were terrific when they had a go at [Manchester] City in the last half-hour. I think Everton is absolutely the perfect club for him right now.”
O’Brien’s consistent appearances for Everton are not only beneficial for his club career but also advantageous for his international duties with Ireland. Townsend highlighted that playing under Moyes in the Premier League is crucial for the Irish national team, which has struggled to field top-flight players in recent years. O’Brien recently earned his 16th cap for Ireland, playing a full match against Qatar.
Everton’s commitment to resolving their right-back issues could provide O’Brien with more opportunities to play in his natural position, further bolstering his career prospects both domestically and internationally.
