The signing of 17-year-old Oliver Whatmuff from Manchester City initially raised eyebrows in the National League. However, the young goalkeeper quickly proved his worth, playing a pivotal role in Rochdale’s remarkable season. His outstanding performances culminated in winning the Reusch Goalkeeper of the Year award at The Non-League Paper’s National Game Awards, in association with Isuzu.
Tony Incenzo said: “He made some great saves to keep Boreham Wood out, denying Abdul Abdulmalik a couple of times. The awards afternoon is held annually by the Non-League Paper, the UK’s number one selling football title and the best place for your non-league news.”
Oliver Whatmuff told the paper: “Some academy players maybe go too high too early and I didn’t want to do that – National League was the perfect place for me. I needed to show myself first and this season has gone to plan, even better than I could have imagined.”
John Couch, executive editor of The Non-League Paper, added: “These awards are really important because non-league football does not always get the recognition it deserves. We like to think of ourselves as the voice of non-league football, and this is a chance to celebrate everyone involved, the clubs, players, managers, contributors and sponsors who help keep the game alive. It’s been another brilliant year of non-league football.”
Whatmuff’s contributions were crucial in Rochdale’s successful campaign, particularly in the play-off final where his heroics in the penalty shoot-out secured their promotion. His decision to join the National League, rather than aiming higher too early, has paid dividends, allowing him to showcase his talent and gain valuable experience. The Non-League Paper, the UK’s leading football title available every Sunday, continues to highlight such inspiring stories, emphasizing the importance of the football pyramid in nurturing young talent.
