Everton’s recent 1-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur marked a disappointing end to their season, ensuring their London rivals, West Ham United, avoided relegation at their expense. This result extended Everton’s winless streak to seven matches, leaving manager David Moyes and his squad reflecting on missed opportunities. James Garner, a standout performer for the team, shared his thoughts on the season and his personal achievements.
James Garner said: “I’m disappointed. We’ve not won in seven, so that’s even more disappointing, to finish the season off without a win in seven is very disappointing. If I could have then I would have tried to fix it. It’s definitely been a progressive season, a better season than we’ve had over the last four or five years. Six or seven games ago, we were talking about maybe having a European run. There’s definitely been an improvement and definitely something we can be positive about going into next season. I think what’s let us down, perhaps over the course of the season because it’s easy to look at the last seven games because it’s been the most recent, is that we’ve let far too many goals in. It’s literally the obvious but we need to keep the ball out of the back of the net. This season we’ve done much better scoring goals, but we need to keep more clean sheets and be a lot more solid going into the new season.”
Garner’s comments reflect a sense of optimism about the team’s progress, despite the disappointing conclusion to the campaign. Everton’s defensive frailties were a recurring issue, and Garner emphasized the need for improvement in this area to achieve better results in the future.
Garner’s individual performance did not go unnoticed, as he was named Everton’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season. His efforts were further rewarded with a new, improved contract in January. The Birkenhead-born midfielder acknowledged the standards he has set for himself and the importance of maintaining them.
James Garner said: “Me personally, I think that I’ve had my best season that I’ve had as a professional. It’s definitely given me a level to stay at going into next season. If I drop below where I’ve performed at this season then it will be noticeable, so I need to stay at this level and if not, go higher.”
Despite his impressive form, Garner missed out on a spot in England’s World Cup squad, a decision that both he and manager David Moyes found disappointing. Garner speculated on whether Everton’s late-season form might have influenced his omission.
James Garner said: “Maybe yeah. The manager chose his players and he might not have had his team even before he made his announcement. I don’t know whether it did play a part, but it is what it is.”
Garner’s reflections underscore both his personal growth and the challenges Everton faced this season. As the team looks ahead, addressing defensive weaknesses and building on their progress will be crucial for a successful campaign next year.
