Darren Fletcher Manchester United
Manchester United’s U18s faced a challenging defeat against Manchester City in the FA Youth Cup final, held at the Joie Stadium. Despite a spirited performance, United succumbed to a 2-1 loss, with City’s Reigan Heskey securing the win in the 87th minute. The match saw City take an early lead through Floyd Samba’s impressive free-kick, only for United’s Godwill Kukonki to equalize shortly after. However, United struggled to create opportunities in the second half, ultimately allowing City’s pressure to prevail.
Darren Fletcher said: “And we’ve had lots of amazing performances, lots of improvement individually and as a team. I think my disappointment is for them, because I feel for them, it’s not easy. We are talking about development here, at the end of the day. Disappointing for me, we didn’t quite bring our level to the game tonight, which is probably the thing that they’ll be most disappointed on when they review it and they reflect.”
Darren Fletcher continued: “I didn’t say too much because it’s not the time, they’re really disappointed. I said I was proud of them for the season that they’ve had, for the efforts that they put in, and as I said to you there, we’ll look back at it and probably be disappointed in terms of how we executed the game plan or the level that we brought in the game. I think you can see the nerves, too many ball losses, too many turnovers against a really good Man City team with two fantastic wide players who are going to cause the problems. We’ve had a lot of control from high levels of possession, which means that you run less and you have to defend less, so that wasn’t the case tonight, so it was a difficult time to experience that.”
This defeat marks another setback for United’s U18s, who narrowly missed out on the Premier League North title to City this season. Additionally, they experienced a penalty shootout loss to Crystal Palace in the Premier League Cup final last month. Despite these challenges, Fletcher emphasized the importance of development and the progress made by the team throughout the season. The young squad will look to learn from these experiences as they continue to grow and refine their skills for future competitions.
