Unai Emery
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has shed light on the circumstances surrounding Harvey Elliott’s limited playing time during his loan spell at the club. The 23-year-old midfielder, on loan from Liverpool, has seen minimal action in the Premier League this season due to contractual obligations that would have required Villa to purchase him for £35 million after 10 appearances. As a result, Elliott’s involvement has been restricted, with Villa seeking to renegotiate the terms of his loan, which Liverpool declined, viewing Villa as a direct competitor in the league standings.
Unai Emery said: “I explained it at the beginning of the season, when we decided how we needed to manage his situation as a player, as a person as well. Of course, as a person, it is a difficult season for him because he is not playing matches. We got this responsibility when we signed him, but then Liverpool had their responsibility when we were speaking in December, January, in the transfer window. And of course, each club has their responsibility and has their decision. One thing is clear – I always spoke with him, being honest always, and of course, he’s a fantastic guy, a fantastic guy. Hopefully, he can continue his career and get his best, because he’s a fantastic guy. He deserved it. His attitude is fantastic every day, and the respect he has for me and for the teammates is really fantastic.”
Emery’s comments highlight the complexities of managing loan agreements, especially when clubs are direct rivals. Despite the challenges, Emery praised Elliott’s professionalism and attitude, emphasizing the player’s potential and the respect he commands within the team. This season has been a learning curve for both Elliott and Villa, as they navigated the intricacies of the loan system and the competitive dynamics of the Premier League.
Emery also reflected on his record against Liverpool, noting the difficulty of securing victories against such a formidable opponent. With a Europa League final against SC Freiburg on the horizon, Emery acknowledged the importance of the upcoming Premier League clash with Liverpool, which could secure Champions League qualification for Villa.
Unai Emery said: “Yes, it is normal because they are a fantastic team. When we [Sevilla] beat them, then it was the first year with Klopp. They were favourites and we could beat them, which was something fantastic in that moment. It would be something not normal if we were beating them normally. They are beating us more than we are beating them. With the process we are in, it is not a surprise.”
Emery’s strategic focus remains on the Premier League, with the club vying for a top-four finish. The manager underlined the significance of the league as Villa’s priority, despite the looming Europa League final.
Unai Emery said: “The Premier League has been the priority and will still be the priority because we are going to play the final, and we have now a 50 per cent chance to win the title and play in the Champions League. Through the league is the first priority because we are involved clearly for fourth position with Liverpool, and we can even lose fifth because behind us are Bournemouth and Brighton with chances to get us. Of course, it is something very important to finish the season with the highest target we set at the beginning of the season. Our ambition is to play Champions League next year. It is something we must try to get through different ways we have.”
As Villa prepares to face Liverpool, Emery’s reflections underscore the competitive nature of the Premier League and the strategic decisions that shape a club’s season. The match against Liverpool represents not just a battle for points but a pivotal moment in Villa’s quest for European football.
