Enzo Maresca, who served as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City during the 2022/23 season, left the club to take charge of Leicester City in the Championship. His time at Leicester was marked by success as he guided the Foxes back to the Premier League at the first attempt. Following his stint at Leicester, Maresca moved to Chelsea, where he achieved significant milestones, including a return to the Champions League, a Conference League victory, and a Club World Cup win in his first season. However, a mixed start to the current season and reported lack of support at the club led to his dismissal in January.
Enzo Maresca said: “I feel ready for the next chapter, that is the most important thing.” When asked specifically about a possible move back to City, he added: “What matters, regardless of the club, is being ready. There are only a few weeks left until the end of the season, then we’ll see what happens.”
Pep Guardiola said: “I wouldn’t be 10 years [here] – even with good titles – if I didn’t have this incredible environment. Of course we’re here because we won a lot – and that’s why they don’t fire you, because they continue to trust you – but apart from that, the club is really, really extraordinary. The people take care of all of us in all details. The little details mean my job as a manager and the players, is to just think about what you have to do. It’s like a bubble that makes people feel good. It’s a big club, but here it is a family.”
Maresca’s potential return to Manchester City comes amid speculation about Guardiola’s future. The Spaniard, who has been at the helm since 2016, has one year remaining on his contract. While there is talk of a possible departure at the end of the season, Guardiola hinted at a possible extension, citing the extraordinary environment at the club as a reason for his long tenure.
Manchester City, currently focused on their remaining fixtures, have four matches left this season, including three Premier League games against Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, and Aston Villa, along with the FA Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley Stadium.
