David Moyes
Tim Iroegbunam has been making waves at Everton, particularly after his standout performance against Manchester City. The 22-year-old midfielder, who joined Everton from Aston Villa, has shown remarkable resilience and determination, earning the trust of manager David Moyes. Despite being substituted at half-time during a challenging match against Newcastle United, Iroegbunam has consistently demonstrated his potential, stepping in for the injured Idrissa Gueye and impressing with his energy and commitment on the field.
David Moyes said: “We want improvement from him. He’s having to challenge the likes of Gana [Gueye] and Jimmy [Garner] and the midfield players in there to get the position. He’s also probably been in a situation where he got games when we didn’t have as much, when Gana was away at AFCON and we weren’t quite at our best around that period with a few too many injuries. Tim as well had a couple injuries with cramping up, and he did the other night, but he’s certainly getting through much better now than he first was. So we hope he can step up.”
David Moyes continued: “I think he’s an interesting young player. It could go either way for him, if he doesn’t get enough time then we need to look at it differently, but at the moment I like what I’m seeing from him.”
Iroegbunam’s journey at Everton began to gain momentum with a crucial role in a victory at the Vitality Stadium in December. Since then, he has started in significant matches, including those against Arsenal and Manchester United. His physical attributes, such as size, strength, and speed, have made him a valuable asset for Moyes, particularly in the absence of first-choice midfielders like James Garner and Idrissa Gueye. Despite initial challenges with positional discipline and effectiveness in the final third, Iroegbunam has shown noticeable improvement.
The upcoming summer promises to be pivotal for Iroegbunam as Everton evaluates their central midfield options. With Gueye’s contract situation uncertain, Iroegbunam has a chance to solidify his position within the team. Moyes’s positive remarks about the young midfielder’s character and potential indicate a promising future, provided he continues to develop and seize opportunities.
