Dominic Calvert Lewis
Dominic Calvert-Lewin showcased his prowess on the field, scoring his 13th goal of the season in Leeds United’s recent match against Burnley. This goal marked only his second open-play goal since the start of the year, highlighting a shift from his reliance on penalties. Manager Daniel Farke encouraged Calvert-Lewin to maintain his focus and not dwell on the decrease in open-play goals.
Dominic Calvert Lewis said: “It’s just anticipation. There have been a few of these occasions in the box recently where it drops for you and sometimes it doesn’t. You have to work on the ‘what ifs’ and I was there off the back of the defender, first to react to the ball and you get your reward.”
Calvert-Lewin’s impact extended beyond his goal, as he played a crucial part in Leeds United’s second goal. His forward drive and clever back-heel pass set up Jayden Bogle, who assisted Noah Okafor in scoring his sixth goal in seven Premier League games.
Dominic Calvert Lewis said of this: “I had the awareness but I could hear him [Bogle] behind me. We’re delighted. I said before the game that we’ve not managed to beat Burnley and we wanted a bit of revenge and get to 43 points.”
The victory over Burnley was not only a testament to Calvert-Lewin’s skill but also a significant boost for Leeds United’s standing in the league. With three games remaining, the team finds itself in a strong position, aiming to secure their place in the Premier League.
Ethan Ampadu added: “We wanted to give them a bank holiday weekend to enjoy. We had the disappointment of last weekend. Hopefully, three more good results.”
Leeds United’s fans were vocal in their support, chanting ‘we are staying up,’ reflecting their optimism and belief in the team’s ability to maintain their top-flight status. The players’ performances, particularly Calvert-Lewin’s, have instilled confidence and anticipation for the remaining fixtures.
