Chelsea’s interim manager, Calum McFarlane, has delivered an encouraging injury update ahead of the team’s upcoming Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest. Speaking at the Cobham training ground, McFarlane confirmed that Reece James has resumed training, while Levi Colwill is also making significant progress in his recovery.
Calum McFarlane said: “Reece is back in training and Levi, both looking good. A little way to the game, so we’ll see how they do, but both are looking promising. We’re taking it day by day. Levi has had a long injury. Reece had a really good run and was then injured again, so we don’t want to push too much.”
James, despite his recent injury setbacks, has continued to play a vital role within the team, contributing significantly to the dressing room dynamics. McFarlane praised James for his leadership qualities and experience, which have been invaluable to both the players and the coaching staff.
Calum McFarlane said: “Reece has been brilliant since the day I stepped up in January. He’s been injured, so it’s a different role. Even though he’s young, he’s experienced and won major tournaments. He’s a massive part of the leadership group and he’s been a massive help to me and the staff.”
Levi Colwill, who recently returned to action with a standout performance for Chelsea’s Under-21s, is also on the path to full recovery. Colwill had been sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament injury but showcased his potential by leading the team to a 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough in the Premier League 2 play-offs.
McFarlane, who began his second tenure as interim head coach with a victory over Leeds United in the FA Cup semi-final, emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and preparation for the remainder of the season. Despite Chelsea’s current position, McFarlane remains optimistic about the team’s prospects.
Calum McFarlane said: “I think you’re right when you say that. We have to win our games and not think about anything else. Getting the next training session right, getting the next game right, taking it day by day and make sure we’re preparing at an elite level.”
The interim manager also hinted at the possibility of integrating young talent from the club’s academy into the first team, highlighting the depth of talent at Cobham.
Calum McFarlane said: “There’s a lot of young talent in Cobham. I know them really well. They’re training with us all the time. They have a massive game tonight and I will be there watching. I’ll be watching and there’s a lot of talent in there that could definitely make the step up.”
As Chelsea continues to navigate the challenges of the Premier League season, the return of key players like James and Colwill could provide the necessary boost to enhance their performance and standings in the league.
