Chelsea’s interim manager, McFarlane, has stepped up to lead the team for the remainder of the season following his previous stint in an interim capacity. The 40-year-old, who transitioned from academy football this season, previously impressed by securing a 1-1 draw against Manchester City with a last-minute equalizer from Enzo Fernandez. Now, McFarlane faces a crucial challenge as he prepares to guide Chelsea against their historic rivals Leeds at Wembley, with a place in the FA Cup final at stake. He has urged his squad to elevate their performance levels, starting with this pivotal match.
Calum McFarlane said: “Of course, everyone at the club has to feel responsible, staff and players. We need to, the players know that, staff and all that, we’ve spoken. We know the recent form has not been good enough and we’re going to do absolutely everything we can and work as hard as we possibly can to make sure we can put in a good performance on Sunday and I think that’s where it starts. I think a lot of football is about momentum and we obviously have had a bit of a losing streak. That can change with one positive result and one positive performance and what we’re going to be able to do.”
McFarlane’s call for responsibility and improvement comes amid challenges within the squad, including a recent incident involving team leaks. Marc Cucurella’s barber revealed on social media that players Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro were absent before their defeat to Brighton. McFarlane has addressed the issue, emphasizing the need for confidentiality and discipline within the team.
Calum McFarlane said: “It has been addressed. It’s been addressed previously. It’s something that we are looking into and it needs to stop. We’ve spoken to them about the importance of that and making sure it doesn’t happen again.”
This is not the first time Chelsea has faced such challenges this season. In March, their line-up for a Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain was leaked to the media. The club identified the source as external and took necessary actions to prevent future occurrences. As Chelsea prepares for their FA Cup semi-final, McFarlane’s leadership will be crucial in steering the team through these challenges and potentially securing a spot in the final.
