Chelsea’s current Premier League campaign has hit a new low following a 3-0 defeat to Brighton, marking their fifth consecutive loss without scoring. This dismal run is the club’s worst since 1912, severely impacting their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League. With manager Calum McFarlane at the helm after Liam Rosenior’s recent sacking, Chelsea is grappling with a series of injuries that further complicate their efforts to salvage the season.
Calum McFarlane said: “Estevao unfortunately won’t play for us this season. He is going to be out for a little bit of time. We’re here to support him.” He added, “I’m not sure on that if I’m honest. He won’t be available for us. I’m sure he’s very hopeful he can make the World Cup but I don’t know on that.”
Estevao’s injury is a significant blow to Chelsea, as the player pulled up after chasing a lofted pass, and it has been confirmed that he will not feature again this season. This development also casts doubt on his availability for Brazil’s World Cup squad.
Calum McFarlane further commented: “Joao [Pedro] and Cole [Palmer], they trained, they’re in a good place. We don’t know yet, we’ll have a look at them and make a call on that. They’re going to train tomorrow, so we are hopeful.”
Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer are both dealing with injuries, with Pedro missing recent matches due to a thigh issue. However, there is optimism that they might return for the upcoming fixture against Leeds United on April 26, as they have resumed training.
Reece James is another key player sidelined with a hamstring injury, with hopes for a return in early May. Meanwhile, Levi Colwill has been back in full training and is expected to play for Chelsea’s under-21 side, though his return date to the first team remains uncertain. Jamie Gittens, who was nearing a comeback, has suffered a fresh hamstring setback, further adding to Chelsea’s injury woes.
As Chelsea navigates these challenges, the focus remains on ending their losing streak and securing a positive finish to the season. The team’s ability to manage these injuries and integrate returning players will be crucial in their quest to regain form and competitiveness in the league.
