Burnley Women are poised for a significant achievement as they prepare for a crucial match against Stoke City at Turf Moor this Sunday. A victory would secure their promotion from the third tier, marking a long-awaited accomplishment for Ross Wallace’s side. Currently leading title rivals Wolves by a single point, the team is calling on fans to fill the stadium and provide the support needed to cross the finish line.
Ross Wallace said: “We’re hoping to get a big crowd. We want to grow the women’s game. If this was in men’s football, you’d probably be trying to calm everything down but we want to grow this team. We want to grow the women’s game around the place as well, so the more fans we can get in the stadium the better. And most importantly, we want to win.”
The season has been remarkable for Burnley Women, who have remained unbeaten in the league, amassing 59 points from 21 games while conceding just five goals. Despite the challenges, including the tragic passing of former manager Matt Beard in September, the team has persevered under the leadership of interim boss Lou Roberts and now Ross Wallace.
Ross Wallace added: “It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster season for the girls. But in terms of the hard work that they put into the season, we’re looking forward to this. The message for me since I came in is basically go and do all the things you’ve been doing and just win. It’s just making sure they do the right things. Our training week stays the same.”
The players are eager to conclude the season on a high note, with the upcoming match representing not just a chance for promotion, but also an opportunity to honor the resilience and dedication they have shown throughout the campaign.
A team member expressed: “The whole team is really looking forward to it. It would mean absolutely everything to get it done. We’ve been through a lot this season. We want to end it the right way and make everybody proud.”
The call for fans to attend the match underscores the importance of community support in achieving sporting success. As Burnley Women aim to make history, the backing of their supporters could prove pivotal in securing the title and promoting the growth of women’s football.
