James Maddison Leicester City
In a surprising move by new Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi, James Maddison was named on the bench for Saturday’s 2-2 home draw against Brighton. This decision comes after Maddison has missed the majority of the season due to a serious knee injury. Although he did not take to the field, his inclusion in the squad offered a glimmer of hope to a fanbase currently grappling with the club’s relegation battle.
Ben Dinnery said: “As far as the medical department, the sports science department and everyone involved in his recovery and rehab, James Maddison is in the best possible physical place to be able to contribute to the team. The next question is does Roberto De Zerbi believe that James Maddison can start a game and contribute to the success of Tottenham from the first minute or is James Maddison in a place where realistically we’re looking at him being an impact player from the bench? However, given the demands and the pressure and limited amount of time Tottenham have to try and maintain their Premier League hopes, then nothing would surprise me! It is whether or not they feel Maddison can contribute from kick-off for 45 minutes or for 60 minutes. James Maddison is a leader, players will be looking up to the likes of Maddison for that moment of brilliance and is he capable of doing it in a one-off moment in games? Absolutely. It is just those levels of consistency optimally over long periods.”
Injury expert Ben Dinnery, founder of the Premier Injuries website, has advised fans to manage their expectations regarding Maddison’s immediate impact. Having been sidelined for eight and a half months, the 29-year-old midfielder is unlikely to return to his pre-injury levels of performance until the 2027-28 season. However, Dinnery remains optimistic about Maddison’s potential to contribute in the short term, particularly as an impact player from the bench.
Tottenham will be hoping that Maddison can make a significant contribution over the next month. While he did not participate in the warm-up during the Brighton game, his presence on the bench suggests he may soon feature in upcoming matches, including the trip to Wolves. The data indicates that while Maddison may show flashes of brilliance, a full return to form will require time and a solid pre-season.
As Spurs fight to maintain their Premier League status, the potential return of Maddison could provide a much-needed boost. If he manages to contribute a few goals or assists before the season’s end, it could prove pivotal in their survival bid. Meanwhile, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how De Zerbi integrates Maddison back into the squad.
