Jarrad Branthwaite
Jarrad Branthwaite, the promising Everton centre-back, suffered a significant setback during the recent Merseyside derby. The young defender was stretchered off in tears after sustaining an injury in Everton’s 2-1 defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Branthwaite left the venue on crutches, and Everton manager David Moyes expressed his concern over the severity of the injury.
David Moyes said: “It could be serious.”
Despite the initial fears, Everton remains hopeful that Branthwaite will avoid surgery and can return to action for pre-season. The club released a statement confirming the nature of the injury and the expected recovery process.
A club statement read: “Everton can confirm Jarrad Branthwaite sustained a hamstring injury during Sunday’s Merseyside derby. The injury is unrelated to the hamstring area which required surgery in October, with a scan confirming no procedure is needed this time around. Branthwaite will now undergo rehabilitation at Finch Farm with Everton’s medical team and is unlikely to feature again this season.”
Branthwaite’s injury is a significant blow to his aspirations of making England’s World Cup squad. The defender had previously undergone hamstring surgery in October, which kept him sidelined for five months. He made his return in January, aiming to regain his form and push for a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the tournament starting on June 17 against Croatia in the United States.
In February, Branthwaite spoke about his ambitions and the challenges he faced due to his injury setbacks.
Jarrad Branthwaite said: “It’s got to be [the goal]. That was my aim at the start of the season. It’s going to be difficult. I think the only thing I can do is go out there and put on good performances every game and give myself the best possible chance. To miss all the time I’ve missed this season, it’s had a huge impact on the momentum I had in the last couple of seasons.”
This latest injury not only affects Branthwaite’s club commitments but also his international prospects. As Everton navigates the remainder of the season without him, the focus will be on his rehabilitation and ensuring he returns stronger for the next campaign.
